"It's not just because he's black,"
Demonstrators began gathering early Thursday for speeches at Freedom Plaza. Among them was Jerry Johnson, 58, a lawyer from Berryville, Va...

Johnson expressed opposition to Obama. "It's not just because he's black," he said. "I wish I could tell you that I loved this guy, that he was a great president, that I had faith in him. But I have none. Zero."

8. It's an ambiguous construction
E.g., it could be "not *just* because he's black," as you point out. It could also be "not 'just because he's black.'" Two different meanings, same words. Unfortunate case of buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo.

Okay, Mr. Smartpants, you tell me how you can tell the difference between the two examples I listed.

You know Chomsky wasn't *just* a political writer!

Look, I'm all for making fun of idiots. But it helps not to look like an even bigger idiot in the process. You know?

This person is willing to identify with the rest of the teabaggers at the event, and they clearly are using all their false motives to obfuscate the real reason they don't like their president. It is another red herring, and it's ALL "just because he's black" all the time.

The right thing to have said is, "it's not because he's black".

37. That would have been unambiguous
And as a lawyer he should certainly know better. But imagine he is responding to a suggestion that the opposition is just because Obama is black, so he says, "It's not 'just because he's black.'" That has a different meaning than saying, "It's not *just* because he's black."

I'm sure he didn't mean to say what he said because he unintentionally gave the game away. And that's the last thing he wanted to do. In fact, he was so focused on this issue that he really couldn't help himself.

I truly believe that some of the anger that the "Jerry" types feel toward Obama is not only that he's black, but that his mother was white and married a black man. In their warped minds, how dare a woman do that!!!

I second your reference to "dickweed".

Racism always rears its ugly head, despite the best efforts on the part of racists to disguise it. He flat-out admits that the President's race has SOMEthing to do with it...and it that's the case, then in actuality his race has EVERYthing to do with it.

On edit: K & R in order to expose bigotry & hatred.

20. I just flashed back to a "Seinfeld" episode.
George was trying to prove that he had black friends so that his co-worker with the Yankees wouldn't think that he was racist.

It's just like during the HCR debates. It seemed that everyone against it "had a friend or knew someone with a friend" in another country with Socialized health care and they hated their system.

All in all, I prefer the old fashioned overt racists who admit to being racist. They're much easier to notice and ridicule than one who starts everything with; "it's not because of race"....... Of course, with them it's always about race or national origin or sexual orientation or religion or.............

and ALL of them love their universal health care, even the more conservative ones! I know it's anecdotal, but it makes me wonder who their alleged "friends" are who hate having cheaper health care which is actually good quality and not any less efficient than ours.

33. I think that their friends were as imaginary as their tolerance towards people unlike themselves.
My sister lives in Germany and I mentioned a few times here that her husband had to have serious surgery. Now if Universal Health Care is as bad as these people with these alleged friends claim, then my sister lied about their experience. My sister never lies though so I have to say that I was impressed with their experience.

His surgery was over 12 hours long and included numerous surgeons and his hospital stay was seven weeks.

Their out of pocket bill for the actual surgery and surgeons and operating room...etc was......... wait for it...... $20.00!!

The seven week stay cost them $10.00 per day which as my sister said, is probably less than they would have paid for food and other daily requirements if they were at home the whole time.

Yeah... that Universal Health Care is real hard to accept. :sarcasm:

21. Nobody questioned Clinton's citizenship...
...Nobody used Clinton's middle name in a loud tone as an attempt to discredit him. Nobody said Clinton was "pallin' around with terrorists." Nobody called Clinton a "lyin' African." Nobody yelled "Liar" at Clinton from the floor of the House as he was giving a speech. Nobody depicted Clinton as a witch doctor, Chairman Mao, Hitler or The Joker. Nobody said Clinton wasn't legitimately sworn in on Inauguration Day. Nobody cared about a "terrorist fist bump" between Bill and Hillary. Nobody said Clinton wanted to enslave white people.

Ironic this would be brought up in light of the subtle racial things that came from the Hillary Clinton camp during the '08 primaries.

He could have meant it literally - of all the reasons, being black isn't one of them or he could have unintentionally had a slip of the tounge - it is BECAUSE he is black. Either way, it says a lot imo.

expect everyone to simply take them at their word that they aren't racist, that they aren't mostly Republican etc.

With that kind of logic they should have just taken President Clinton at his word that "he didn't have sex with that woman," and been done with it.;)

Poster's note, Sorry President Bill I still love ya. :) As IMHO it had nothing to do with how you did your job, which was all that IMHO was any one else's, besides yours and the other parties directly involved, business.

Also we should all just believe that Fox news is fair and balanced, just cause they say so, right! :sarcasm:

54. It has nothing to do with his race, color, or ethnicity.
In my case. It has everything to do with his policies, too many of which I oppose.

But then, I'm left of center.

For the loudest detractors, race is a BIG factor. A friend, who happens to be a republican, told me this just last week. She's an old-school republican, and a hell of a lot more liberal than she realizes. She voted for Obama.

She told me last week that the political unrest we're seeing locally, the anger and the extremism, IS connected to race. She hears it from fellow Republicans.

Why don't you have any faith in him?

Especially any Democratic authority figure?

If it's not "just because he's black", then why?
