Last time this volcano blew, it spewed ash for TWO YEARS
Was just watching DW news (from Germany) and they said the last time this volcano erupted in 1821 it continued to spew ash for TWO YEARS! Yikes!

5. Exactly.
This is just an unhappy coincidence of geologic and meteorologic conditions. The wind will shift and the volcano will stop spewing ash in a matter of days.

I cant see this becoming a persistent condition.

3. Would 2 years of ash help fight global warming?

7. Yes, though it's doubtful it would keep up at the same volume...

...still, you never know. It's an interesting example of how nature can just fundamentally change the rules on a whim. If this were a prolonged situation it would have huge economic and environmental repercussions. It wouldn't permanently resolve the problem but could slow it down significantly for decades, in theory.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laki for more details on large-scale eruptions, though the effects today would be less severe in the short term.

4. But, since no one was flying, they didn't much care. NOW, however....
TWO YEARS???? "YIKES!" is an understatement.

10. Yeah, maybe ocean liners will come back in style...
The QM2 is the newest one, replacing the QE II I think.
