REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT ON SPACE EXPLORATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY / Good news for KSC!
REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT
ON SPACE EXPLORATION IN THE 21ST CENTURY

John F. Kennedy Space Center
Merritt Island, Florida

......I want to say a few words about jobs. Suzanne pointed out to me that the last time I was here, I made a very clear promise that I would help in the transition into a new program to make sure that people who are already going through a tough time here in this region were helped. And despite some reports to the contrary, my plan will add more than 2,500 jobs along the Space Coast in the next two years compared to the plan under the previous administration. So I want to make that point. (Applause.)

We’re going to modernize the Kennedy Space Center, creating jobs as we upgrade launch facilities. And there’s potential for even more jobs as companies in Florida and across America compete to be part of a new space transportation industry. And some of those industry leaders are here today. This holds the promise of generating more than 10,000 jobs nationwide over the next few years. And many of these jobs will be created right here in Florida because this is an area primed to lead in this competition.

Now, it’s true -- there are Floridians who will see their work on the shuttle end as the program winds down. This is based on a decision that was made six years ago, not six months ago, but that doesn’t make it any less painful for families and communities affected as this decision becomes reality.

So I’m proposing -- in part because of strong lobbying by Bill and by Suzanne, as well as Charlie -- I’m proposing a $40 million initiative led by a high-level team from the White House, NASA, and other agencies to develop a plan for regional economic growth and job creation. And I expect this plan to reach my desk by August 15th. (Applause.) It’s an effort that will help prepare this already skilled workforce for new opportunities in the space industry and beyond.

So this is the next chapter that we can write together here at NASA. We will partner with industry. We will invest in cutting-edge research and technology. We will set far-reaching milestones and provide the resources to reach those milestones. And step by step, we will push the boundaries not only of where we can go but what we can do.

Fifty years after the creation of NASA, our goal is no longer just a destination to reach. Our goal is the capacity for people to work and learn and operate and live safely beyond the Earth for extended periods of time, ultimately in ways that are more sustainable and even indefinite. And in fulfilling this task, we will not only extend humanity’s reach in space -- we will strengthen America’s leadership here on Earth.

Now, I’ll close by saying this. I know that some Americans have asked a question that’s particularly apt on Tax Day: Why spend money on NASA at all? Why spend money solving problems in space when we don’t lack for problems to solve here on the ground? And obviously our country is still reeling from the worst economic turmoil we’ve known in generations. We have massive structural deficits that have to be closed in the coming years.

But you and I know this is a false choice. We have to fix our economy. We need to close our deficits. But for pennies on the dollar, the space program has fueled jobs and entire industries. For pennies on the dollar, the space program has improved our lives, advanced our society, strengthened our economy, and inspired generations of Americans. And I have no doubt that NASA can continue to fulfill this role. (Applause.) But that is why -- but I want to say clearly to those of you who work for NASA, but to the entire community that has been so supportive of the space program in this area: That is exactly why it’s so essential that we pursue a new course and that we revitalize NASA and its mission -- not just with dollars, but with clear aims and a larger purpose.

1. 2500 extra jobs than previously were going to go there with B*sh should make them be pro-Obama, they
get to stay in there homes and have health care, fully afford college tuition for their kids, and put money away for retirement... pretty good deal, and America gets scientific research.

2. I want to know who is doing the math..7000 jobs will be lost and adding 2,500..== net loss of 4,500
jobs..wake the fuck up..

and let me add............this was on MSNBC and mentioned on my Fla local news tonight........

OBAMA DID NOT SPEAK TO NASA WORKERS TODAY!!!!!!!!!

Per MSNBC:

"Tamron Hall, anchorette, says to reporter Jay Barbree, "In just about 45 minutes Obama will speak to NASA workers to explain why he's deciding to end plans for America's return to the moon, at least for now. The administration feels there's a time to reassess and reset the situation. It is not his quest to end our attempts to go to the moon, correct?"

BARBREE: He's messing up the sandbox if you will. But you said there in the introduction that he's coming here to speak to the workers. And what I've just been told, he's going to speak before about 200 select people in the building where they will build the Orion and not a single worker, I'm told, has been invited.

HALL: Wow.

BARBREE: I wonder if the President knows that. Maybe he'll be told that when he gets over to the building and maybe we'll find him pulling in some workers because, after all, that was the purpose of his trip, as you said."

WHAT FUCKING SHIT IS THIS????????????

4. This is what I read - I don't think you should be so negative......

If President Obama does keep some of the Constellation Program intact then that is a good thing. I do think we need to see what comes out of it but at least it is better news then what we had heard before. I know myself that the launch facilities were going to be torned down and there is a lot of talk now from Texas that they are going to fight this because it will mean more jobs in Florida and that was not the case before.

NASA Centers Get New Work Orders: Assignments Favor States Hardest Hit by Loss of Constellation
By Amy Klamper

..........

I think as I said we need to wait and see what happens but it is a better deal then was put forth before the speech.

5. what you missed is 7000 are going to loose their jobs with 2,500 added..that is a net loss of 4,500!
It has been well spelled out on our local news in Florida with many of the scientists mad as hell!

Yes the scientists and NASA workers Obama came to see ..but didn't bother to see!

And I have a damn hard time being postitive when I know something is nothing but a damn con job!

Especially when it comes to more workers losing jobs in my state that is already in a depression!

so please spare me with the 2,500 jobs that will be added ..when the total is really 7000 that will be lost at NASA with a caveat of 2,500 added..in real math that is a 4,500 net loss!

Oh and it is being widely reported factually in my state of Florida..the bullshit and spin and lies start somewhere else!

6. Like I said 2,500 and the fact he is proposing a $40 million to help job growth there is still good.
Edited on Thu Apr-15-10 11:45 PM by 1776Forever
That is better then nothing and like I said we will have to wait and see what happens. Just because he didn't speak to the workers doesn't mean he isn't going to try and keep some jobs in Florida.

7. Huntsville AL & Houston upset over plans of keeping KSC strong
well, considering that a couple years ago they (Bush-era) were talking about shutting down the launch facilities at KSC, and that they'd lose up to 10K jobs, I'd say despite the horrific conditions Obama was handed, he's still doing NASA as best as can be expected despite the fact that there will be job losses. It's just they won't be as large as what the previous admin. had planned. Of course there will be people who will have to find other work, but at least they're providing tens of millions to help with that, and, KSC is essentially a vibrant facility throughout Obama's presidency, and that didn't like it would be the case when W. left office, and it was planned for many NASA jobs would be going to Houston & Huntsville.

Some good news, despite some painful facts, for the space coast!

Here's two stories from the other day where Huntsville and Houston agonize over the moon mission not being done as their area had hoped, and jobs remaining more so in FL due to the Obama plan for KSC -
"Huntsville celebrates space flight, frets over NASA's future"
http://www.waff.com/Global/story.asp?S=12290375

plus - "Obama's NASA plan could cost thousands of Houston jobs"
http://www.39online.com/news/local/kiah-nasa-parker-story,0,6757287.story

Again, despite incredibly tight financial conditions, FL is getting more than what Dubya had planned in moving operations away from KSC to Texas and Alabama. KSC really got the good end of the deal by getting Obama instead of McCain, because he wouldn't have changed anything Bushy had planned.

10. I don't remember that promise
I know he said he was going to let the Shuttle program retire like it was planned to do. I also remember him saying that he wanted to put the Constellation project on hold. He is doing a lot of what he said he was going to do.

interview!

But reading is beyond your capability????????

So you just post shit and think that is knowledge of what Obama said or didn't say while campaigning..just because "YOU SAID SO"????????

here let me spoon feed you ok??????

and before you critisize the source..understand this was..on MSNBC's own web site ;

The Number 1 source ...for their own interview is NEWSBUSTERS!..if you have a problem with the source take it up with MSNBC and ask them why they have sourced their own interview with NewsBusters and not on their own web site where numerous other interviews with Barbee are posted..( i would guess it was because they didn't want anyone to get the truth either..but they had to reference it somewhere!!..their very own interview could not be hidden because Newsbusters posted it..so hiding it completely ..would be too obvious!)
And many of us in Fla saw that interview...those with the jobs that will now be lost after Obama lied to theNASA workers ..for their votes!)

from the MSNBC Interview>>>>>>>>>>>

BARBREE: But I'm a little disturbed right now, Alex. I just found out some very disturbing news. The President came down here in his campaign and told these 15,000 workers here at the Space Center that if they would vote for him, that he would protect their jobs. 9,000 of them are about to lose their job. He is speaking before 200, extra hundred people here today only. It's invitation only. He has not invited a single space worker from this space port to attend. It's only academics and other high officials from outside of the country. Not one of them is invited to hear the President of the United States, on their own space port, speak today. Back to you Alex.

Will President Obama keep or break space promise .

http://www.floridatoday.com/content/blogs/space/2009/08/will-president-obama-keep-or-break.shtml

People packed the room at Brevard Community College. Many were space workers or people with ties to the industry.

They longed to hear him outline his plans for NASA. Until then, Obama's campaign had released conflicting policy statements, one cut NASA's budget by billions to fund education and the other boosted space spending and added one extra shuttle mission.

In light of coming decisions about NASA's future, it seems worthwhile to check back on exactly what the president said last August in Titusville.

"Let me be clear," the president said, "we cannot cede our leadership in space. That's why I am going to close the gap, ensure that our space program doesn't suffer when the shuttle goes out of service."

His goal was "making sure that all of those who work in the space industry in Florida do not lose their jobs when the space shuttle is retired because we cannot afford to lose their expertise."

He promised a space program that would "help grow the economy right here in Brevard County and right here in Florida. That's what we're going to do."

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson and legendary astronaut John Glenn, stumping for Obama, reached out to reporters. Aides pressed the media to keep noting Obama's commitment to "close the gap" and save space jobs in Florida.

**now it is estimated IN FLORIDA 9,000 NASA WORKERS WILL LOSE THEIR JOBS!

11. well, firstly, they need to be pissed at W for destroying the economy & causing the job losses
secondly, I don't recall him saying there would be no job losses. If he did, I'll readily admit not hearing it, but all things considered, this is the best that KSC could have hoped for, and the thousands who will get to stay at NASA should be thrilled when most of the jobs were going to be shipped off to Houston/Huntsville under B*sh's plan. Now, since it's Mars instead of the Moon, Florida politicians lobbied, surely, for the president to keep the jobs here since Florida has a lot better chance of going blue again than Texas or Alabama.

heard it!

aS DID fLORIDA MEDIA..AMND THEY WILL SURELY REMIND EVERYONE WHEN OUR SENATE SEAT IS UP FOR GRABS IN NOV AS WELL AS OUR GOVERNORS SEAT!

And it is being discussed on our local news in Fla!..What is being discussed is more broken promises..added to drill baby drill now getting shoved down our colective Fla throats!

And i will tell you this ..among many many dems I know here in Fal..there is pure anger!

sometimes we only hear what we want to hear..or what directly effects us personally..doesn't mean it wasn't said..or used as a campaign promise!

as this was! By Obama. while he was talking out of the other side of his mouth to teachers in NH.
But his guys and the repugs are fucking them now too!!

easy to speak out of two sides of ones mouth isn't it ..then no one can hold you accountable..only this time in Fla he will be held accountable..by 9,000 NASA WORKERS WHO WILL NOW BE LOSING THEIR JOBS AND ALL THE COMPANIES AROUND ksc WILL BE LOSING AS WELL!
