2. It's not surprising that they wouldn't recognize a scientific logo
To me it was immediately obvious that it was a depiction of an atom, but then I approve of science.

Their shame knows no bounds.

6. I saw it and thought, hydrogen atom.
Then I thought, "but usually you show the entire orbital, or would show where the electron's been--sort of like a swoosh in a cartoon, and not accentuate where it'll eventually be." Then I pondered the absence of the actual nucleus. And that it was strange having the hydrogen atom be presented when the entire conference is focused on actinides.

"Inspired" by the Rutherford-Bohr model is giving the tin-eared designer a bit too much credit.
