Repubs Are FUCKED, Totally FUCKED Regarding Financial Reform
Edited on Thu Apr-15-10 11:56 AM by Beetwasher
Which is why the Dems can really take a hard line stance on it.

No matter what they do, they're fucked. If they support it, then they are supporting a piece of legislation that will be a BIG feather in the Dems cap come Nov. And they will be fucked.

If the oppose it, then they will be opposing a VERY popular piece of legislation and they will rightfully be painted as being in the corner of Wall St. against the little guy. And they will be fucked.

I love it. Thems the breaks. And the timing couldn't be better. Imagine debating this going into the elections?

2. By and large the Dems are owned by the same people who own the Repubs..
I wouldn't hold my breath expecting any radical financial reform, it'll turn out very similar to health insurance reform.

Maybe we'll even get a private mandate to purchase individual retirement accounts on Wall Street.

8. Wait and see how it turns out in the end..
I correctly predicted that the outcome of health insurance reform would be a private mandate and no public option at least six months before it happened.

4. Which is exactly why they won't.
I'd dearly love to be wrong, but the pattern is there. The "everything is off the table" Republicrats will ensure that all that is "open for consideration" will be a binary choice between giving Wall Street everything and giving Wall Street everything with a cherry on top.

14. Nothing to base it on? Are you serious?
Let's just start with the 2006, you know, the first time the American people demanded that this headlong rush to disaster be changed.

Stop the War! Democrats didn't even threaten to hold up funding for the war, in fact Pelosi & Co. gave shrub more than he asked for to keep is slaughter for oil going.

"Impeachment is off the table". Gong so far as to use the power of the majority to bottle up resolutions to investigate the blatant criminality.

MCA, Patriot, Bankruptcy, CC reform, the list is long and I doubt you'd read it is I bothered to put it together. But to claim there is nothing to base my statement on is disingenuous at best.

5. Republicans just oppose it and lie about what it is.
Republicans: "Democrats want to blow the deficit sky-high on wasteful programs and raise taxes, and shut out our proposal for fiscal restraint and tax cuts, and they're ramming it down our throats!!"

Media hacks: "This is the worst government takeover this country has ever seen -- they're turning our democracy into a Communist Marxist Socialist Stalinist Hitlerist Evil thing! What about the constitution and our founding fathers?"

Teabaggers: "We're taking our country back from the evil-doers and their radical agenda to kill our grandmothers and starve our children and rob us blind -- WE don't think that's fair!"

Doesn't matter what the original legislation was. We're watching that play out all over the place today.

"We are in agreement in 85% of this bill, but it's still too much too quickly. Let's scrap it and go back to the drawing board. We can then craft a bi-partisan bill that will work for everyone. One that will end shady Wall Street practices but not burden them with all these regulations."

They said the same thing on health care.

cat bird seat. :) By sheer virtue of the fact that the opposition is so worthless mainly. But we still need to deliver or we will lose even that advantage. The Repubs are indeed in a shitty political position. But if we don't deliver some hard blows they will turn the tables on us. My prediction is that we will not really reign in Wall Street effectively and the tables will be turned on us. Just my prediction.

We know he'll be their pick so there's no way they WON'T be able to support it. They'll have to contradict themselves and support it to support him. It's going to be great and we're going to see some easy wins in 2010 and 2012.

37. Ken Lay drafted the US Energy Policy, so shouldn't Bernie Madoff create financial reform?
Don't you remember when Dick Cheney had his six secret meetings with Ken Lay in the VP mansion to draft energy policy for the US? Using conservative logic we should let the hedge fund managers (or death row convicts) draft financial regulation.

I agree with you though. Conservatives keep painting themselves into a corner that is getting smaller and smaller. They are so painted in they can barely move. They love corporate corruption so they are going to be against all regulations of the financial world. So even the most dimwitted conservative will be able to see that their conservative 'leaders' are really nothing more than corrupt con men who are prostitutes to their pimps on Wall Street.

If the democrats don't pummel conservatives with this message they are either stupid, or just as corrupt as the conservatives.

is because the Dems already showed their weak hand with Emanuel and Frank and Dodd all having gone out of their way to severely water down reform early in the process, and Dems holding secret meetings with Goldman Sachs, etc.
