Yemeni Bride, 11, Hospitalized with Genital Injuries
Source: ABC News

An 11-year-old Yemeni girl who was was married to a man in country's Hajja province was hospitalized today with genital injuries, said a human rights group in Sanaa.

It was the second incident involving a child bride in the last week. A 13-year-old girl died after being sexually assaulted by her adult husband. Both girls were married in the country's rural Hajja province.

The 11-year-old girl was married last year only under the condition that the adult husband would wait until she reached puberty to consummate the marriage. He did not wait, nor do many of the men who marry young brides, says Amal Basha, director of the Arabic Sisters Forum.

An estimated 50 percent of women in Yemen are married before age 18, some as young as 8. Less than a week ago the Sana'a-based human rights group reported the death of a 13-year-old bride in the same rural area. The Associated Press reported the girl was allegedly raped, and that her 23-year-old husband is now in police custody.

-----

An average of eight women die each day in Yemen due to child marriage, many of them in childbirth, according to the Arabic Sisters Forum. The group runs a hotline for victims of domestic violence and has been lobbying in support of a minimum marriage age now under consideration by the Yemeni parliament.

3. Yet, in another thread on DU today, "atheists" are the most hated group in America...
Panic over the Unknown: America hates Atheists (The Jury Expert)

I don't know about the rest of you, but I would hazard to guess that if you ask any "atheist" if girls age 8 to 11 should be having sex, the answer will be not "no" but "Hell no!"

An average of eight women die each day in Yemen due to child marriage, many of them in childbirth, according to the Arabic Sisters Forum. The group runs a hotline for victims of domestic violence and has been lobbying in support of a minimum marriage age now under consideration by the Yemeni parliament.

Pushing against the proposed law is the strong hand of Islamic conservatives in Yemen. Clerics have declared women like Amal Basha apostates from Islam for opposing child marriage, which they see as divinely ordained. The government, she says, is intimidated by the religious and tribal customs.

"They say this is Islamic…and they declared jihad against... the UN treaty on women's rights," she said.

"They say my campaign is a Western agenda, that it will lead to sex out of wedlock and prostitution," Basha said.

And don't forget we have our own groups of the religiously insane in this country (remember the FLDS of Texas? Just one example of older men wanting to "marry" multiple under-aged girls so they can fuck them? Remember that one?)

And to Hell with all of you "holier-than-thou" religious fanatics in America who "hate" atheists! It's people like you and the rest of the fucking religiously insane that make this world a hateful, spiteful, and dangerous place.

6. Apparently you just wanted to show Atheist abuse because none of your blather has to
do with the article but what atheists would do...

Most Islamic's in the world are more progressive and are not marrying and killing child brides.

It takes man to do that, not necessarily a religious man. Let's not forget all the guys in prison who murdered people and THEN found God. It's not a religious/non-religious thing or all religious/non-religious would be doing it. It's a human, man, pedophile thing.

10. I simply compared the two threads...
One was how much atheists are hated in this country;
The other has to do with a despicable act that harbored by religion.

I know many atheists who would find repulsive the thought of having sex with under-aged girls, and I see there are many "religious" sorts that find it attractive and even condoned by their "religions."

It seems man can do whatever disgusting and repulsive act he wants, as long as his "God" says its okay, but mention "atheism" and watch the religiously insane spew their hatred.

And the vast majority of religious people also find that repulsive.

Come on, your argument simply exists to attack religion. Pedophilia exists with or without religion. I'm sure I can find plenty of accounts of pedophilia in this country with the perp calling himself an atheist. Until all atheists or even most are pedophiles, I'm not going to make the connection. Same goes with religion. Many religions don't even condone sex at all.

The problem is man.

4. Fucking animals
Any chance this child molester will go to jail? How can marrying an 8, 11 or 13 year old be considered normal? All cultures are NOT created equal.

11. No, it's going to take laws and cracking down on them. Public opinion has to change.
The article says 50% of the people married are under 18. It appears young child brides are common place.

What a scary mentality they have there.

But let's not forget, a violent regime changes is all it takes to change a place that was civilized into a barbaric state. Lots of societies have gone backwards. I don't know the history of Yemen or if they were ever more civilized to begin with but I'm looking them up now to find out.

the fastest democracy in the Arab world.

They're one of the poorest Arab countries and only discovered oil there in the 1980's, and are expecting their reserves to be depleted by 2017. The gov and corrupt businesses/foreigners kept the oil money. They are dealing with tens of thousands of refugees.

Their human rights record is not good - marred by corruption of government that included torture and censorship. They finally gave a report to the UN in 2009. They've accepted over 100 recommendations to fix things.

They're also working hard to stamp out corruption. They became a unified country in 1990. They've had a lot of focus on financial reform. Half the county is Suni, the other half, Shia. Where are they? - they boarder Saudi Arabia.
