GOP tries to head off liberal Stevens replacement

By MARK SHERMAN, Associated Press Writer Mark Sherman, Associated Press Writer – Sat Apr 10, 6:02 am ET
WASHINGTON – Republicans are promising a "whale of fight" during the congressional election campaign if President Barack Obama picks too liberal a nominee to succeed retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens.

Eleven days before his 90th birthday, Stevens said Friday he would step down when the court finishes its work for the summer, in hopes that a replacement could be confirmed well before the next term begins in October.

Obama said he would quickly name a successor in the mold of Stevens, who he said was a voice for ordinary people rather than powerful interests.

A White House official said about 10 people are under consideration, but speculation has focused on fewer than that. Leading candidates are said to be Solicitor General Elena Kagan, 49, and federal appellate judges Merrick Garland, 57, in Washington and Diane Wood, 59, in Chicago. All three were considered last year as well, and Obama interviewed Kagan and Wood before choosing Sonia Sotomayor for the high court.

I'm sure we all think Obama should listen to the slime Orrin Hatch?

Meanwhile, where is this fight from Democrats when Repugs put up repulsive figures

like Clarence Thomas, Roberts or Alito?

Dems are always folding before the game even begins!

Remember Clarence Thomas hearing and the Biden betrayal?

1. OK, under one condition
That Roberts, Alito, Scalia and Clarence Thomas also resign, so we can have five new unbiased jurists instead of just one.

Otherwise, Obama sould pick the most flamingly progressive qualified justice he can find. Let the Radical Right scream
bloody murder all they want. They already have four extremist rightists on the Court. There are exactly ZERO extremist
leftists on the Court. They should shut up while they're ahead.

2. I remember it well.
I watched those hearings. For me, Biden carries a mark in the 'not so good' column over his attitude toward Anita Hill.

10. And. . .

there were actually about a dozen witnesses against Thomas -- people who had worked

at the EEOC -- there was the primary one we had heard about who they had been attacking *--

there was a more senior member at the EEOC, a speech writer, who was prepared to leave

her hospital bed to testify against Thomas -- and there were about a dozen in between who

were there to testify that Thomas was a constant sexual harasser of women.

Biden promised Hill's attorneys that those witnesses would be presented and heard!

Then, in the middle of the night, he closed the hearings!

And, he had spent about four hours before that with a guy who was there to make Hill look

like a slut -- because she had called him evidently looking for a date! By the end of the

four hours, the guy was saying, he wasn't even sure that Hill had called him!!

We have Thomas on the court because of Biden --

* Her name may have been Angela Wright -- but they all get the Mary Magdalene/Prostitute

treatment!

7. He hasn't even nominated anyone, and they're already picking a fight over it????
That says a lot about what they're really interested in, doesn't it? They have no fucking clue as to who they oppose, but they oppose them anyway.

11. Yes, because we all know that the fucking GOP
is SUCH a good judge of how qualified a judge is.

Barack Obama will get whoever he wants to fill that seat and they know it. They're just setting themselves up as victims of an EEEEEEEEEEEVIL LIBRUL CONSPURRRRACY again.
