...throw their sorry asses in prison. Oh, and there's no record of their biological son being enrolled either.

1. What's the possibility they were fundie nutjobs, trying to 'save' him by
" 'Murkanizing" him, and he wasn't too thrilled?

2. I fear terrible abuse,
Edited on Sat Apr-10-10 09:16 AM by Sen. Walter Sobchak
Why bypass the local child welfare system and put him (a US citizen by-the-way) on a plane to Moscow?

Well, in the hands of child welfare he could report or they could observe evidence of abuse while "deporting" the child might seem to make such evidence go away.

In any event the child became a US Citizen the moment the family presented itself for inspection at immigration, you can't deport your kids.

5. What they did
was reprehensible.

If there is evidence of abuse, I'm sure the Russians will make it well known to us.

I agree that this woman belongs in jail for "deporting" her son. It's insane.

3. First of all...

That women shouldn't have been able to adopt a kid. Some of those children have serious issues, and need a kind, patient, loving, sane family to care for them. WTF did she expect with this child's background? It's fucking heartless what she did. This story absolutely infuriates me - she's done more damage than she could if she just left this child alone. I know she likely had it difficult, but that is no excuse. You don't have kids or adopt them unless you fully understand what you might be letting yourself in for. I'm glad Russia is tightening their restrictions on American adoptions. Many adoptive children have been abused and even killed by their adoptive parents. Just because a family can pass the tests does not mean they are fit to adopt. Just because you are white, Christian and 'merican does not mean you are the best candidate to adopt.

4. here's a great take on dKos on this.
Disposable adoptions? gimme a break.

Even worse if she's a home skuler, inflicting biblical fairy tales on a poor, unsuspecting innocent child.

7. wtf does school enrollment have to do with it
my kids aren't enrolled in school either as we homeschool them...should my ass be in prison? what she did was shitty, no doubt. but school enrollment has nothing to do with being a good parent.

8. It's supposedly very tough to qualify--how did they get to adopt?
since care of their biological son is apparently questionable--no red flags?

11. I just read an article in the paper. She was a single, childless, 33 year old nurse in TN.
She was willing to adopt an older child, which not everyone is willing to do. It appears as though she may have adopted the boy sight unseen.
