Jerry Brown at Google: 'We're digging' into CalChamber ad

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jerry Brown told reporters Friday that his campaign was "digging" into the story behind a California Chamber of Commerce TV attack ad against him that started running Tuesday and was abruptly pulled yesterday.

Brown made the comments in a quick talk with reporters after appearing with Google CEO Eric Schmidt in a forum on the Internet company's Mountain View campus.

The 72-year-old attorney general wondered out loud why the chamber was running the spot when Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman had already spent $46 million on her campaign by March 17, much of that money on campaign commercials.

"Collateral incentives," Brown suggested mysteriously about whoever was funding the ad. Then he added, "We're digging" and said he meant the campaign not the attorney general's office.
