LINCOLN (AP) - A 30-year-old Lincoln woman has been given 9 years and 8 months to 16 years in prison after her eighth drunken-driving conviction.

Judge Jodi Nelson of Lancaster County District Court on Tuesday sentenced Heather Swatek for the DUI and for driving while her license was suspended.

The judge told Swatek, “You’re just plain dangerous. The fact that you will get behind the wheel ... and put the public at risk is something I cannot ignore.”

Police say a 13-year-old relative was with Swatek when she was arrested last July. Swatek’s blood-alcohol level tested at more than twice the legal limit to drive.

Court records show Swatek’s first DUI arrest came in 1999, seven months before she turned 21.

7. Yeah...walking took too much time.
And those pointy shoes probably hurt her feet. Poor thing--they don't give you a car with that "Big House."

5. There are only two possible things to do with a repeat offender
First, impound the car. Only cars that were stolen by the offender should be allowed off the impound lot and returned to their owners. The rest should be sold at auction. Anybody who lends a car to an habitual offender deserves to lose it.

Impounding the vehicle can be done under drug forfeiture laws and should be done at the second DUI (everybody gets one mistake).

Jail time with mandatory alcohol and/or drug rehab has to be the other component. Turn the pot smokers loose to make room for them.

Three DUIs means someone has an intractable problem and should be locked up for public health and safety reasons.

There are quite a few drunks in NM who are into double digits and one loser who has more than 20 DUIs. This should not be allowed to occur in any sane country.
