50 years after he was chained and set afire, WWI veteran is honored

Marion, Arkansas (CNN) -- A traditional three-shot volley salute and the solemn sound of taps echoed across the black cemetery in the Delta flatlands of Arkansas, just across the Mississippi River from Memphis, Tennessee.

The military honors were followed by the jubilant singing of "Amazing Grace." The service had been five decades in the making.

Everyone was here to honor Isadore Banks, an African-American veteran of World War I who was chained to a tree in June 1954, doused in gasoline and burned beyond recognition.

The slaying -- a year before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to whites on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama -- remains one of the nation's oldest unsolved civil rights cases.

2. Letter to Barack Obama dated December 29, 2009 perhaps from grandchildren?

Subject:
ISADORE BANKS

To:
President Barack Obama

December 29, 2009

MR.PRESIDENT I sure PRAY you receive this e-mail. I have been trying to get help with this issue for sometime now. I selected the topic, but it is MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than that. It concerns MURDER, A COVER UP BY THE F.B.I, LAND, AND A LOT OF MONEY. You put aside $1.25billion for Black Famers and their heirs and I'm one of those heirs, but I'm not so much concerned about the money (which we need) I'm more concerned about the death of my grandfather MR.ISADORE BANKS AND BRING JUSTICE AND CLOSURE TO OUR FAMILY. Granfather was murdered in Marion Crittenden County, Arkansas. He was reported missing June 4 1954 and his body was found weeks later June 26, 1954. He could not be I.D. except for the shoes he was wearing because of the HEINOUS, SENSELESS, INHUMANE, AND BARBARIC WAY HE WAS MURDERED.

Entire letter at the link.

RIP with your honors Isadore Banks.
