MoveOn.org Founder Challenging Brown in Gov's Race

A founder of the liberal activist group MoveOn.org who is frustrated with the pace and tenor of presumed Democratic nominee Jerry Brown's campaign for governor announced Tuesday that he will challenge Brown for the party's nomination.

Peter Schurman says Brown isn't being bold enough in his plans to fix California and is "working from a playbook that's 30 years out of date."

Schurman, who is 40 and lives in San Francisco, said the Democratic nominee must take bold stands, such as forcing corporations and the rich to pay their fair share. He supports raising taxes and ending the two-thirds vote requirement to pass budgets.

"Hiding in the back room and working the insider party connections is not the path to victory. It might've worked 20 years ago, but the landscape has changed," said Schurman, who advises start-up companies and activists on how to effectively use the Internet. "With the arrival of the Internet, the path is to take bold stands."

Brown's spokesman, Sterling Clifford, said he is confident Brown will win the nomination and the governor's race in November. He took issue with the idea that many Democrats are frustrated by Brown's slow campaign.

"I don't think a lot of Democrats have expressed that," Clifford said. "I think much like in the case of this particular candidate, some number of professional political consultants not employed by any candidate for governor expressed some concerns."

1. He needs to drop out and endorse Brown
Nothing should make Brown spend campaign dollars when he needs to save it for the idiot Whitman.

3. I'll support Schurman. Brown is letting Whitman walk all over him.
And I've heard many Democrats say that. Brown is, indeed, campaigning using an outdated model and he's been unable to generate much enthusiasm and much needed volunteers that it would take to win.
