8. 7.8? That's about 4 times the power and devastation of the 7.2 that hit Mexico a few days ago.

Wow, isn't President Obama still slated to visit Indonesia, which is nearby?

He delayed the Indonesia visit because of the HCR vote, and is supposed to be going there in a month or two I think.

9. Major earthquake hits off Indonesian island of Sumatra
A tsunami alert has been issued after an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 hit the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

The quake's epicentre was 204 km (127 miles) northwest of Sumatra's coast, at a depth of nearly 48km, the US Geological Survey said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most active areas for earthquakes and volcanoes.

It has recently been struck by string of quakes; one off Sumatra in September killed more than 1,000 people.

12. Google Earth shows it about 111 miles southeast of the 2004 earthquake that caused the Tsunami.
