Unemployment Extension | 99ers Appeal To Congress For Aid
By: Theresa Cahill

Las Vegas, NV (Mar 31) – As members of Congress enjoy their spring break frolicking with family and friends, there remains tension in the air regarding their return to session. The unemployed continue to hang in limbo awaiting their fate when the Senate reconvenes.

In addition to the fate of current millions, there is a mass appeal from those who have exhausted all the mandated unemployment assistance.

According to Change.org, “the longest unemployed workers did not create this depression.” Now there is an outcry that the system continues to fail those who have no where left to turn. Issa Decker states, “You have decided to ignore the people you reduced to poverty. The longest unemployed workers did not create this depression, you did.” For those in the unemployment extensions and benefits boat that has already sunk, there may be recourse. By due process, a Tier V unemployment benefits petition is in circulation for those who have reached their 99 week cut off yet still remain jobless.

The First Amendment of the Bill of Rights ensures citizens, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” Millions of unemployed workers have just cause to seek such redress of grievances.

The above-mentioned petition expresses the anger and frustration over the governments “failure to regulate the banks, health industry, and corporations.” It goes on to state, “People who were fully employed, paying taxes, and raising families are now paying the price for your negligence. They trusted you to keep something like this from happening. You failed them.”

When Congress returns from its happiest of times, time off with full pay and benefits, it is to be hoped that not only will they immediately address the unemployment extension needs of so many, but also for all those completely forgotten.

This has been the biggest problem with the media reporting about “extensions”. The extensions do not guarantee all unemployed people will be paid benefits until the end of 2010, as had been suggested or implied, but the extensions only allow unemployed people to move along on the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation tiers until they exhaust all benefits. Most people WON’T make it until December, they will be falling off the cliff long before then. That is why Congress needs to address this with additional tiers, such as a Tier V, or perhaps adding addtional weeks to Tiers 3 and 4, make them each 20 weeks long instead of 13 weeks and 6.
