Welfare Queens Against Health Reform

Welfare Queens Against Health Reform -- Now With Actual Reporting!*
Jonathan Chait
March 26, 2010 | 2:31 pm

Earlier today I had an item about the irony of an agriculture subsidy recipient complaining to the Wall Street Journal that health care reform could transfer money from people like her to people who "just want freebies." A reader directed me to the Environmental Workings Group's database of farm subsidies, where I could discover just how much that farmer (Kitty Rehberg) collects from the federal government.

Answer: a lot. Since 1995, the farm Rehberg owns has collected $357,627 from the Department of Agriculture.

But it would violate her principles for the government to subsidize medical care for the uninsured. If those freeloaders need government help to buy insurance, well, they should have thought of that before they went and got breast cancer.

..corporate welfare. the documentary FOOD, INC. brings much of it to light as regards the agricultural aspect of it. Thanks for posting and exposing these hypocrites.

edit to add P.S. FOOD, INC. is out on DVD

5. Ignorance must be blissful
In brief - my father's family farm (I'm a part owner -my dad's father left it to his 33 grandchildren) has been in our family since 1866. First portion purchased after the close of the Civil War, and additional acreage picked up in Georgia and Mississippi during the depression and the 1980's. They were I 'believe' amongst the rare few blacks in the deep South that went from slave to landowner so quickly after the Civil War.

She's showing her abject selfishness. Farm subsidies are (in my opinion and something I've used in face to face discussions on health care) by their very nature 'socialist'. I'm proud of that fact. It's a Socialist Program that has WORKED for America.

I'll bet you she is still poisoning people with pesticides too. We've been 'organic' so to speak since the late 1960's. If she's selfish enough to be po'd about this - then she's selfish enough to use cheap toxic pesticides with those subsidies and poison he fellow Americans.

Sorry to get all wonky and wierd and 'socialist farmer' all over your thread! ;-)

6. Kittie Rehberg is a former State Senator from Iowa
A number of legislators in the Iowa General Assembly are farmers. It would be interesting to compare amounts of federal ag subsidies taken by rethugs and Democrats.
