I am sick of hearing about your facebook conversations
I have a facebook account. I don't use it too frequently but I think it's quite a fine service. Sometimes I have arguments with people on there about politics, but very rarely as I'm selective about who I maintain links with and do not respond to blanket emails, chain letters, etc. Generally I don't even read them, but rather insta-delete them.

Lately it seems like there are 10 threads a day of the form 'a right winger said something horrible on facebook, oh noes'. There is a democratic community on Facebook. Connect with it. Stop running over to DU to breathlessly tell everyone about the latest thing that happened to you on Facebook.

I swear, it's like the daily update on every little thing that happened in the schoolyard during recess. That's something parents have a duty to be interested in, but it is inappropriate for adults to do the same thing about their facebook experience. Put on your big boy or girl pants and deal with your facebook problems on fucking Facebook.

I am not opposed to the mention of the place, or even reports some especially gripping dynamic taking place on there. But the endless threads consisting of 'some nobody said something stupid on fb, how should I respond' are becoming truly pathetic.

22. I don't do helpless, I'm afraid. It's disempowering and encourages bullies.
Learning to debate with an unfriendly opponent, do simple research, and not allow yourself to get suckered into arguments you don't understand are essential survival skills in politics. Reposting every upsetting thing that appears on one's facebook wall is partly what helps conservative memes to spread around the net in the first place.

Chain letters and random garbage from FB are like dog dirt on shoes - life's a lot more pleasant for everyone if you scrape it off before coming indoors.

10. Except I have to open the thread to hide it
It's not just the fact that they clutter up the topic list. It's that every time I do look at one of these threads, there's a 90% chance the content consists only of 'got in argument, can't do own research, what should I say heeeeelllp meeee'. Keee-rist. If you can't handle an argument on Facebook, maybe you should just not take part, or else learn to do basic research.

It's the self-inflicted helplessness that gets up my nose. DU is not the Facebook Emergency Rescue.

I have some high school and old military buddies on there who are right wing nuts. I just block them, and then go in occasionally to see their posts. I just ignore the political ones, and reply to their normal everyday posts. But the blocking keeps me from seeing their junk on the home page.

I don't give a damn what some asswipe on Farcebook said.

I don't need to go to freeperland to know they're idiots, either.

I don't find the "I had an argument today with some right winger and told him blah blah blah" interesting. First of all, arguing with them is a complete waste of time. Second, reading about it is an even bigger waste of time.

Any conversation that is "then I said, then she said, then I said, then she said" is inherently annoying and unnecessary.

No one is forcing you to read or even look at the threads. And if others want to do so, what business or concern is it of yours? And we're supposed to be grateful that you're "not opposed to mention of the place", as if you were one of the administrators?

The Hide Thread feature wants to be your friend. Maybe you should let it.

51. Sorry anigbrowl but since you grouped together these FB users together - here's the latest (R) lie
my Independ..err Republican "friend" is sharing on her page:

THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE!!! WE ARE ALL IN FOR A RUDE AWAKENING!!
Is this for real?
THIS IS THE 2ND OFFICIAL WHO HAS OUTLINED THESE PARTS OF THE CARE BILL
Subject: : Judge Kithil of Marble Falls , TX - HB3200 highlighted pages most egregious
Please read this........ especially the reference to pages 58 & 59

JUDGE KITHIL wrote:
"I have reviewed selected sections of the bill, and find it unbelievable that our Congress, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, could come up with a bill loaded with so many wrong-headed elements."
"Both Republicans and Democrats are equally responsible for the financial mess of both Social Security and Medicare programs."
"I am opposed to HB 3200 for a number of reasons. To start with, it is estimated that a federal bureaucracy of more than 150,000 new employees will be required to administer HB3200. That is an unacceptable expansion of a government that is already too intrusive in our lives. If we are going to hire 150,000 new employees, let's put them to work protecting our borders, fighting the massive drug problem and putting more law enforcement/firefighters out there."

JUDGE KITHIL continued: "Other problems I have with this bill include:
** Page 50/section 152: The bill will provide insurance to all non-U.S. residents, even if they are here illegally.

** Page 58 and 59: The government will have real-time access to an individual's bank account and will have the authority to make electronic fund transfers from those accounts.

** Page 65/section 164: The plan will be subsidized (by the government) for all union members, union retirees and for community organizations (such as the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now - ACORN).

** Page 203/line 14-15: The tax imposed under this section will not be treated as a tax. (How could anybody in their right mind come up with that?)

** Page 241 and 253: Doctors will all be paid the same regardless of specialty, and the government will set all doctors' fees.

** Page 272. section 1145: Cancer hospital will ration care according to the patient's age.

** Page 317 and 321: The government will impose a prohibition on hospital expansion; however, communities may petition for an exception.

** Page 425, line 4-12: The government mandates advance-care planning consultations. Those on Social Security will be required to attend an "end-of-life planning" seminar every five years. (Death counceling.)

** Page 429, line 13-25: The government will specify which doctors can write an end-of-life order.

HAD ENOUGH???? Judge Kithil then goes on:

"Finally, it is specifically stated that this bill will not apply to members of Congress. Members of Congress are already exempt from the Social Security system, and have a well-funded private plan that covers their retirement needs. If they were on our Social Security plan, I believe they would find a very quick 'fix' to make the plan financially sound for their future."

Honorable David Kithil
Marble Falls , Texas

All of the above should give you the point blank ammo you need to support your opposition to Obamacare. Please send this information on to all of your email contacts

Some of the threads we use to see about Republican spam emails, conversations with right wing relatives/coworkers, etc have been replaced by Facebook threads simply because it's another way people communicate. The substance of people's posts about their personal lives hasn't changed.

"Stop running over to DU to breathlessly tell everyone about the latest thing that happened to you on Facebook."

"Put on your big boy or girl pants and deal with your facebook problems on fucking Facebook."

Seriously, anigbrowl, I can only assume you haven't yet mastered (or grown out of) your big boy pull-ups. Are you even aware that a mature, "grown-up" stage follows. One that doesn't include believing the world revolves around any one of us exclusively, or what we think. It is actually a good and productive phase (sorry, though, no cute, catchy jingles to inspire those who need that extra boost of encouragement).

But, trust me, if you reach that milestone, where you no longer need your "big boy" pants and a lolly, you may just find intelligent, well educated adults exchanging ideas, bouncing concerns and questions off each others. Even questioning ourselves. All with the expectation of civility, and sincere and reasonable responses from the members who choose to participate.

62. damn, now I wish I had one to talk about
. . . but this all sounds awfully arrogant and rude to me . . . of all the different subjects that file around on this board, I'm not sure what the relevance to us is of YOUR personal objection to these posts.

The complaint just reeks of the 'schoolyard during recess' conversation that you compared the Facebook conversations to.

71. while I understand your complaint, I disagree with it...

I personally do not *DO* FB, Twitter, or any number of other johnnie-come-lately social networking sites. I have my own domain (loaded with tons of capabilities... such as CHAT, BLOG, BB/Forums, etc.) but do NOT use it for such things... although I do maintain a bookmark list of sorts, for family and friends (as well as creating "web pages/sites" for others). I also do not own a Cellphone, PDA, MP3-player, etc., etc., etc.

However; just because I don't do any of the above, that doesn't mean that I do not recognize the fact that there is a whole other ALTERNATE universe of people who DO such things.

Reading here on DU (and on other forums which I frequent) about the latest Tweet / FB entries... I can SKIP the posts (unless the subject line says something very meaningful to me). I've been online (administering, hosting, moderating, and participating in CHAT, on BBs, and in FORUMS) since the early 1990s and I'm pretty selective about what where and when I will spend my time... I think others should be afforded the same degree of choice. That is to say: they can read my missives, or ignore me... and turn about is quite fair play... but essentially telling them to STFU, is beyond my level of civility.

Have a nice day!

74. My only reason for using facebook
is to maintain contact with friends and family out of state. It's not a political tool for me, and I get irritated at all of the "junk" that even my friends are always sending me; I have 39 requests for various things that I've never responded to.

75. So everyone on DU should bend to your will
because... why? Can you give a valid reason you should be allowed to censor what's on DU?: rofl:

80. Er, no...
If I thought stuff ought to censored I would have said so, or called for Skinner and the mods to adopt such a policy. Nice straw man though.

77. some people just enjoy confrontation and arguing but then they gripe about it
They have to be right and they have to make everybody else think exactly the way they think(which use to be a republican characteristic but more and more seems to be a characteristic among democrats as well). You are so right anigbrowl. If someone is so offended by what someone says they should be more selective in who they allow to be their friend.
