9th Circuit 3 judge panel rules in favor of police who tasered and scarred a pregnant woman
Edited on Fri Mar-26-10 08:18 PM by usregimechange
A federal appeals court says three Seattle police officers were justified when they used a stun gun on a pregnant mother who refused to sign a traffic ticket.

Malaika Brooks was driving her son to school in 2004 when she was stopped for doing 32 mph in a school zone. Rather than give her the ticket and let her go on her way, the officers arrested her. They used a Taser three times when she refused to get out of her car.

A panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 Friday that the officers were justified in using force because of the threat that Brooks could have picked up her car keys off the floor, started the car and driven away erratically.

The dissenting judge called the ruling "off-the-wall," and said the police officers had no authority to arrest Brooks — let alone the authority to use a Taser on a nonthreatening woman who was seven months pregnant.

9. Were the keys on the floorboard under the steering wheel?
'Cause if so, there's no way in heck a 7 month pregnant woman could have picked them up if she was behind the wheel.

17. Unbef*cking unbelievably un-American and inhumane: if only unbef*cking
unbelievably corrupt judges serving on the district, circuit, and supreme courts could be impeached for imfamously high crimes. :grr:

18. What a terrible parent
Starts with driving at unsafe speeds though a school zone.

Follows it up with refusing to sign the ticket, forcing the officers to arrest her.

Decides to refuse the lawful commands of officers and gets tazered.

She should think more about her children than about her ego.

19. Since when do we taser people for being terrible parents?
Tasers were for criminals the police would normally shoot at but wanted to avoid the lawsuit. They were never for pregnant women who refused to sign a speeding ticket. And we only the officer's word that she was going 7 mph above the limit.

20. Who said she was tazered for being a bad parent?
They are for people who create a danger by refusing to comply with lawful orders from the police.

She was tazered so arresting officers could detain her.
