5. It comes as no surprise that
Boren D-OK was one of the no's. My state has become a political cesspool of backwards thinking.

8. Thanks for this list. One thing I would like to know (which will require research) is
how well this list correlates with touchscreen voting systems that have no possibility of verification and/or with ES&S/Diebold voting systems. ALL states now have 'TRADE SECRET' code voting systems, with the code owned and controlled by a handful of rightwing corporations. About half the states have NO audit/recount controls at all (there is NO way to check for machine fraud); the other half do only a miserably inadequate 1% audit (99% of the votes are not counted--the machines tell us who 'won' those votes). Also, ES&S just bought out Diebold, giving ES&S an 85% monopoly on U.S. voting systems. ES&S is even worse than Diebold as to far rightwing connections. This bodes very ill, indeed, for the future.

The system by which pro-corporate and pro-war representatives and policies are shoved down Americans' throats combines filthy money and corrupt corpo-fascist 'news' media with the capability--the EASY--capability to "fix" specific elections (or, as in 2004, the presidential election--or, as I believe occurred in 2008, to "permit" a "liberal" to become president--in this case, probably to start taking the blame for Bush Junta horrors--but to significantly shave his mandate as a further curb on reform, in addition to helping to inflict him with a "Blue Dog" Congress). The ways in which the will of the American people is thwarted are many and complex, and some of them are diabolically anti-democratic, such as 'TRADE SECRET' vote counting. The latter is the final blockade to reform--if filthy campaign money and corrupt media don't work.

I suspect that ES&S/Diebold--especially non-verifiable, touchscreen systems--are used to keep far rightwing Pukes in Congress (the most obnoxious, stupid and fascist congress members), whereas "Blue Dogs" are the result of more complicated corruption, although any electronic system with 'TRADE SECRET' code and inadequate audit controls can be manipulated, and may be part of 'selecting' "Blue Dogs" in the primaries (basically, fooling Democratic voters that they are voting for change).

We need a study of how these combined forces--including, as the final blockade to reform, non-transparent vote counting--result in such egregiously bad representation of the interests and will of the American people in Washington DC.

From what I can see, this health care bill removes some of the obvious cruelty of the insurance-run U.S. health care system, curtails some other abuses and tries to maximize, not health care exactly, but insurance coverage (coverage of the cost of health care)--and may have some controls on costs (I'm not sure of this), but is the LEAST that could be done, given the crazy cruelty of the system overall and its worst problem: its for-profit basis. When you look at Social Security and Medicare, you know that we can do far, FAR better than this. So, how was a better bill prevented by means of WHO got to Congress, and HOW they got there?

'TRADE SECRET' voting systems are so anti-democratic that they should be tossed out, on principle (let alone on what they may have done to our political system and decision-making in Washington on issues like war and torture, and health care). But this list may provide some clues as to how the 'TRADE SECRET' voting system (s)elects the wrong people in primaries and general elections, and it provides an interesting starting point for determining what needs to be done to re-democratize our system. It's not terribly useful to tell grass roots activists merely to "work harder" to elect good people--when such powerful forces are militating against just that. It leads to demoralization of grass roots activists and voters--the worst thing that can happen to a democracy. We need to pinpoint HOW these forces thwart us and work on practical strategies to re-gain our power as a people.
