Eat this Mississippi bigots - the teenager you banned from the Prom gets a scholarship on Ellen
Edited on Sat Mar-20-10 12:28 PM by TheBigotBasher
Constance McMillen, wanted to do what other young women in American schools around the Country. To go with her date to the Prom.

Constance is a young lesbian woman, who wanted to bring her grilfriend. The school said no.

The school board faced who then faced discrimination charges decided it would simply have no prom. If they couldn't be bigoted they would simply be mean.

Well as a big screw you to the anti-gay bigots of her district, Tonic.com have given her a $30,000 contribution towards her continuing education costs and a scholarship in New York.

It does not make the decision of her school board any less disgusting. Her school board by doing this prove themselves to be nothing more than hate filled bigots. It does however show that not all minds are small minds and it proves that despite all the hateful right wingers shown on tv every day, as representatives of "American opinion", there are individuals proud to stand behind those supporting justice and equality.

Ellen was right, this shy, very bright girl, who simply wanted to take her lover to the Prom, and who never wanted to be a "superstar" has a very bright future ahead of her.

I wish Constance every bit of luck for her future and thank her for the brave step she took in the fight for equality.

5. This is great news.
..And isn't it also true that many many kids in the district have sided with her? I thought I read news about that here a week ago or so.
Stupid stupid school board.

9. Perez Hilton is flying her and her girlfriend to LA on the night her prom was
supposed to happen for a super fun night of music and parties. He may be an annoying celebrity gossip blogger but I applaud him for this.

10. No way I would let my kid do that
It is a sort of sweet offer but teens don't below at LA parties.

11. Deny her a party of a lifetime?
I'm not going to have kids but if I had and my teenage young adult child was invited to such a party - I'd be so happy for him/her (maybe a bit jealous). I'd also want pics.

12. It's over the top unless some adults get to go with.
Edited on Sat Mar-20-10 01:07 PM by EFerrari
Kids have enough on their hands in their own communities at prom without going to a different city among a bunch of strangers. It's a sweet offer.

The best thing that will result of all this is that the local GLBT community will be stronger. That has nothing to do with Perez Hilton. lol

/oops, wrong Hilton

24. I'm guessing he wouldn't want any negative publicity surrounding this and would
make sure she stayed safe. He may have his issues but he's a strong advocate for GLBT rights and wouldn't want bad press to sully an otherwise great story.

27. I'd let my 18 yr. old daughter do it.
Not younger than that, however. They'll have a great time and I bet that PH will give them nothing less than that.

28. I have to disagree
I was a 'kid' and a young adult like this girl, when I attended many 'LA parties'. All that happened to me was good. I learned valuable lessons from some of the most famous people in the world. Nothing more than a flirt from a woman who is a legend. Those events and parties were much better and safer than say, happy hour at the Marriott in Omaha.

13. So, what do the kids denied their prom get?
Edited on Sat Mar-20-10 01:22 PM by Flubadubya
Don't get me wrong, I'm tickled the girl is being recognized for her courage in this fashion. However, the school board evidently shut down the whole prom night for the rest of the school.

And, of course, the sad thing about that is 1) the other kids don't get a prom, and 2) the denied kids end up blaming the poor lesbian girl instead of the bigoted school board.

Kinda sad. Just wish there was something could be done for the rest of the kids.

ON EDIT: The spamming has stopped now... maybe they went to lunch, LOL!

14. The anger needs to be directed at the schoolboard
and not the girl. Blame needs to rest with those standing against equality and if the appearance of Constance on the Ellen show helped that then all the better.

It wasn't so long ago that the few good people who sat at a Woolworths tea shop wanting a drink were considered trouble makers stopping others from having a break.

15. Agreed...
My item #2 is basically saying that.

I also think the school board needs to make the thing right... for the girl as well as the rest of the school - but I won't hold my breath. :(

an alternate prom was being organized, in fact there is more than one offer around, so I think the kids will do fine

29. A business in New Orleans offered to foot the entire bill for one there, too
Any private one started by the students in the school in question would obviously be as exclusionary as possible, but someone did step in and offer the whole school a real one.

20. They get the chance
to possibly make their first real adult decision about allocating the blame; was it Constance's fault or the school board? This could set their course for life.
