Oathkeepers
Edited on Wed Mar-17-10 12:55 AM by nadinbrzezinski
well for those of you needing an intro to this "wonderful group of citizens" I highly recommend the Mother Jones article in the current issue...

Here you go, read it today at the bookstore... and I already knew of these guys... blood run cold still

Oath Keepers and the Age of Treason

— Photos by Lucian Read.

Glenn Beck loves them. Tea Partiers court them. Congressmen listen to them. Meet the fast-growing "patriot" group that's recruiting soldiers to resist the Obama administration.

March/April 2010 Issue

THE .50 CALIBER Bushmaster bolt action rifle is a serious weapon. The model that Pvt. 1st Class Lee Pray is saving up for has a 2,500-yard range and comes with a Mark IV scope and an easy-load magazine. When the 25-year-old drove me to a mall in Watertown, New York, near the Fort Drum Army base, he brought me to see it in its glass case—he visits it periodically, like a kid coveting something at the toy store. It'll take plenty of military paychecks to cover the $5,600 price tag, but he considers the Bushmaster essential in his preparations to take on the US government when it declares martial law.

His belief that that day is imminent has led Pray to a group called Oath Keepers, one of the fastest-growing "patriot" organizations on the right. Founded last April by Yale-educated lawyer and ex-Ron Paul aide Stewart Rhodes, the group has established itself as a hub in the sprawling anti-Obama movement that includes Tea Partiers, Birthers, and 912ers. Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs, and Pat Buchanan have all sung its praises, and in December, a grassroots summit it helped organize drew such prominent guests as representatives Phil Gingrey and Paul Broun, both Georgia Republicans.

There are scores of patriot groups, but what makes Oath Keepers unique is that its core membership consists of men and women in uniform, including soldiers, police, and veterans. At regular ceremonies in every state, members reaffirm their official oaths of service, pledging to protect the Constitution—but then they go a step further, vowing to disobey "unconstitutional" orders from what they view as an increasingly tyrannical government.

And no, these guys are NOT playing games either.

2. Being a member of Oath Keepers should be incompatible with service as
...either a solider or a law enforcement officer.

Especially police officers. We wouldn't tolerate gangsters or KKK members as police officers, and we should not tolerate Oath Keepers as officers either.

3. Once again, 9 years too late to do any damn good.
These fucking people are pissed NOW. After Mad King George and Darth Cheney used them to rip the Constitution to shreds and put themselves above the law. Not after the outcome of the 2000 election. Not after the Patriot Act passed. Not after the lies to Congress and the American people get us into Iraq. Not after torture, or illegal warrantless wiretapping, or destroying a secret CIA intelligence-gathering front company.

But they're pissed now because... we're going to slow the inflation of healthcare costs and re-regulate the banks???

:banghead:

Oh, oh, gays in the military. Yeah, tyranny right there. The guy shooting straight might not be straight in the sack. Definitely worth a rebellion. Yeah, that's it.

Thom Hartmann had one of these guys on his show last summer. The guy seemed reasonably sane and Thom wasn't able to get a rise out of him, so I didn't pay much attention to the movement. The guy must have been sandbagging.

I don't care so much about the guy he's buying... regardless of the caliber or the power, it only shoots as good as he can. And frankly I'd rather have him buy a single 20-pound $5,600 rifle and ammo that costs $5 a shot than four or five rifles or 8 or 9 handguns.

5. Some ARE very rational and well developed and complex individuals
Edited on Wed Mar-17-10 02:18 AM by nadinbrzezinski
then there are the loons. The one Thom had one was one of the rational ones, in fact the leader... and he might be very well intentioned... and truly a libertarian. But he will have some trouble controlling some of his members. You can even see that when you read the article.

I mean they've used his site to recruit for militias and KKK...

So to give the absolute benefit of the doubt, given he was an aide to Ron Paul... he might be as honest as Ron is in his believes... now the movement on the other hand...

On and let me add, I agree with Ron Paul ONLY in one thing, his stance on how Neo Liberals lied the country to war... but it is a case of a clock stuck and being right twice a day.
