FOR more than a decade, Deborah Jeane Palfrey ran an escort service that catered for upmarket clients in the capital, sending college-educated women to men's hotel rooms.

For about $US300 ($A360), she promised 90 minutes of a discreet "legal, high-end, erotic fantasy service". But the discreet part is over, after authorities charged her with operating a prostitution ring.
