I. GOT. A. JOB!!!
Finally. Except for a couple of "temp" positions that paid nothing with no benefits?

I. GOT. A. JOB!!!

It's a REAL one, with responsibility, good benefits, decent workplace, Alaska-based corporation, stability, decent pay (not great, but decent) and best of all?

I. GOT. A. JOB!!!!!!!!!!

DU, you've kept me somewhat sane during this. We'll probably still lose the house, but now we have a little more hope than what we did yesterday at this time.

I. GOT. A. JOB!!!!!!!!!!

:loveya: DU!! :loveya::hug::loveya:

Thanks you all - SO MUCH - for the support and hope and suggestions and putting up with my rants and depressions and despair. Without you, I don't know if I'd have made it this long, and now - I. got. the. job.

Only a few days at -40, none any colder, very little snow.

But I betcha (wink, wink) we have some good fires this summer.

Come up and visit, rv - cuz I'll probably be down your way on the bike sometime this season, and will expect the same invite! :loveya:

My new boss has been here as long as I have, and the corporation is interior-Alaska based, so I know the people, the villages, and what's even better is that I have a working knowledge of ANILCA and ANCSA (the Native Claims and Settlement Acts).

I'm gonna LOVE working for a BLUE corporation!!

Seriously, congratulations! It shouldn't be such a "big deal" - but it is these days, isn't it?

I was reflecting the other day to a friend, "there was a time I could honestly say I'd been offered every single job I'd ever interviewed for." Of course, that was 30 years ago! Heck, I'm lucky to even GET an interview. It IS depressing! You feel so - useless - and unwanted. :(

But now you're past all that! HOORAY! :bounce:

Now - just 'cause you're working is NO excuse not to post on DU. Every day! Got that? ;)

I will post, maybe not EVERY day, but certainly often - DU is my lifeline, and has been for 7 years!! DU'ers like YOU are my lifeline, I literally could not have taken this without all of you.

I've felt the same way, mzteris. I truly believe that most of the jobs I interviewed for, I was either qualified or overqualified - and for the hiring committee? Too. fucking. old.

Not with these folks, I felt welcome from get go.

You will, too. Some people appreciate their older folks!

I thought things were picking up last fall when I finally got offered a part time job. My job was cut from 20 hours to 10 hours a week in January with no hope in site that it will be otherwise now. My husband was teaching two classes for a community college but pushed himself too much to try and keep up with it, ignoring his diabetes and ended up in the hospital and subsequently the nursing home so now we are back where we started. Broke and dependent on food stamps, energy assistance and my elderly mother. Two people with Master's degrees, good experience, good references, and so forth, it just doesn't seem fair! I remember the days we would actually have our pick of job offers. Now we can't even get an interview.

146. hey Dolly
I'm sorry to hear about your husband. You've been having a pretty rough time of it. How are YOU doing these days?

It seems things are "improving a bit" in the overall job market, but there are SO many people vying for the same job, it's a crap-shoot to even get your resume/application LOOKED at. And then selected when they see a huge gap in employment while being a stay-at-home-mom - and I guess they can do the math and figure out my age while they're at it. The ONLY interviews I've gotten are with govt agencies who aren't "supposed to" discriminate in the application process. In every instance, they liked me but hired someone with "current experience".

Hang in there, kiddo.

I don't know why I am still on this earth sometimes, I must have something left to accomplish, I just can't seem to figure out what it is! But things for the good thoughts!
My mom is 81 and still working full time at Wal Mart and is basically paying our bills. But now she is scared she is going to lose her job. They are making her climb an 8 foot tall ladder and wash windows outside of the store! She went to the manager and he told her she either do it or quit! She has been there 12 years and is one of the few full time Greeters left so she thinks they are trying to get rid of her. What has our world came too when stuff like this goes on?

Maybe you should whisper in the mgrs ear that if she falls and gets hurt (or godforbid worse) there is a HUGE lawsuit waiting to happen. . .

Heck I'd contact their corporate off. Or hey - maybe the local TV station can show up just as she's climbing up that ladder, eh? That would garner some attention!

204. people did start making phone calls . . .
Apparently, people did start calling the store because this is the only store in the area that is requiring this of their elderly greeters. But it is also the only store in the area that also has full time greeters who are making a good salary. They want to get rid of the full time greeters and hire only part time people so they are trying to get them to quit. One already did. My mom says she is too stuborn to let them do this too her so she is going to fight them over it but I am afraid she has bit off more than she realizes with facing Wal Mart the giant.

37. I ALSO GOT A JOB TODAY!!!
I have been out of work for almost a year. I am down to my last penny of my savings. I use to be an engineer with one of the big three auto makers in Detroit. I went back to school to sharpen my skill set and moved to Chicago and have been looking for work since last July. I know how you feel about the depressions and dispair. I was so down in the dumps for not finding anything and that I was starting to think the unthinkable. Then I got a phone call offering me a position today. For those of you who are still looking don't stop. Keep on looking. It's hard work but it will pay off. I hope this and the first post will serve as an encouragement for others.

41. Keep looking is great advice - especially to us old folks!
gholtron, WELCOME to DU. It's the best "place" in the world for hope and healing - and insults!!

I'm so glad you also found work and that you're encouraged.:welcome::hug:

To all of you - thank you for pushing my joy factor even higher! I know my experience and skills are worthwhile, I know I am capable - but I was sure wondering for a long, long time. I had taken so much time "off" to take care of my father-in-law when he moved in with us (Alzheimer's) and so many of you were with me through that - then I realized that my "time off" was a total liability as far as most of the corporate world was concerned. I wasn't "working". Didn't matter that I'd learned so much about home health care, insurance claims, Alzheimer's and how to deal with it, how to change an adult diaper, how to feed someone who could no longer use his false teeth - I wasn't in the "real" world.

I knew better because of my family on DU. Encouragement, real help in the form of links, referrals, books to read - I found out I was really "worth it".

If there's anyone on this forum who wants my help with anything, and that includes proofreading, research, whatever; you've got it. One reason? I got it from all of you.

Thank you!

I appreciate your name and your sentiment. I am so - relieved is the best word. I figured, at my age? McDonalds, or Wally World greeter. But they wouldn't hire me - too much "experience".

I keep thinking to myself - if not for my DU friends/family, if not....

I don't know where I'd be. I got stuck after 9/11 in a world I wasn't sure of anymore. My father-in-law had moved in with us, with Alzheimers, and I'd agreed to help care for him. The rest of the world was coming apart. George Bush? Holy Shit!!! I found DU, and you, and all the rest of this community, and it saved my life.

See? You ARE the goddess! :loveya::hug:

Hell, I did the butt-shake-three-times Happy Dance!

I will take your suggestions, and do as you suggest - because I've never had a bad suggestion yet from a fellow DU'er.

It's been a little tough being from the Sarah Palanista/Don Youngistan/Lisa Murkowskigeria state. We don't BELIEVE in Gummint up h'yar (at least, not since the Pipeliners arrived).

We worked hard for Begich and President Obama. I think that brought decent karma.

Happy Dance!

P. Silly. I knew what you meant (see... I must be... uh... physical, no that's not it... uh.. physics.. uh....)

Where my DU family is concerned!

My kitties are just rolling in it. Playing slap-paw, girl-playing-boy-voice purrs, posing, frolicing, and literally rolling in the hallway. None of 'em are young, either! They do pick up on mood, don't they!

I want, once again, to thank my DU family. Blue? If you're not on this forum, I know where to catch ya, girlfriend - and you anchored me, too.

If none of you have gotten to some of these sites, please do so:

Mudflats (the ULTIMATE Alaskan forum): http://www.themudflats.net/forum/index.php

Shannyn Moore (the ULTIMATE Alaskan radio announcer/rabblerouser/muckraker): http://shannynmoore.wordpress.com/

Progressive Alaska (yes, we really DO have some folks, right Phil?): http://progressivealaska.blogspot.com/

From there, you can go to visit a bunch of Alaskan sites that show we really aren't a Repuke state. Just a weird one.

And I am serious - if any DU'er needs assistance with any kind of secretarial/office/clerical/proofreading/research thing?

I. Am. Good.

I know that now!!

58. Okay, my friends. It's 12:45 AM Friday here in Fairbanks.
Lots later for most of you, earlier for some.

Pay attention to the important shit now, ok? I so much appreciate the support, caring, and shoulders I've cried on here at DU that I don't want to detract from HCR and the important right-wing fundy bullshit we need to fight that's happening all over - and I want you all to know how much I love you.

I don't say those words easily. Ask my spouse. He waited 25 years to hear them, and it took me that long to say it, and mean it, except to my daughter.

If I can do anything (including help write a resume - send me the stats, I can WRITE), let me know. I will do everything I can! I actually, finally after 2 years, have a real job. A real place to go Monday to Friday (I know, cliche, but what can I do? It's their schedule).... and most of it? I attribute to the support I got from you all.

And I'll always have "home" - with DU, and my spouse, and my kitties - even if the house goes, I'll have that! And THAT is hope. Without DU, I wouldn't have had nearly that.

There's some stuff in my local news that's disturbing. Our borough (county) tried to pass a clean-air regulation regarding wood stoves. A bunch of righties showed up at the Borough commission meeting openly armed (it's not illegal). No one who was "for" the clean air spoke. They were afraid of these people - with good cause. One of these people assaulted his wife and threatened a cop a day later.

This is what we deal with NOW. We Dems don't back down, we don't quit, WE DON'T GIVE UP HOPE. Thanks to DU, I didn't. I won't. You all remember the hope we had in November? It's still there. There WILL be recovery, there WILL be jobs (thank you, DU friends!), there WILL be ways we can get HCR, there WILL be ways we can overcome.

I never expected this response to my "I got a job" post. I thought I'd get a few old buddies saying, wow, great. Thank you all for thinking of me and rooting for me - it's like being stranded on the side of the road and some really cute guy in a CAMARO picks you up and takes you back to town and ALL your friends see it!! Yeah, that good. That's how you make me feel. THAT good.

Regardless of disagreements (if we don't have 'em, we ain't Democrats), regardless of fights (ditto), regardless of the idosyncracies - we are a community, and a community that gets involved, that cares, that works together. And dammit, we do a good job of it!

DU :yourock:

DU'ers? you do even more -

62. Good karma and all hope to you!
If I have any left to pass on, I surely will. That "good feeling" is the same I felt when I interviewed with this corporation (NOT one of the ones that will use "personhood", I can promise that!) - it's like you walked in and felt easy? At home?

The woman who will be my superviser is about 10 years younger than me. She didn't mind it - that was my first big clue. Others I've interviewed with, who were either much younger (15 years or so) or older, didn't seem comfortable - she did. She knows her job, I know mine, and we both know them very well - and I think it'll work the way it should.

You'll do it. I have a good feeling for you, as well. Warm.

:woohoo: mnmoderatedem - you'll :yourock:

Now, the rest of my good wishes go out to all of our DU teachers, because THEY are the foundation.

70. TT, you rock as usual - and thank you.
I'm sorry for being so enthusiastic - it's taken me so damn long to land a J.O.B. that I wasn't sure I still could.

One thing that kept me going? My dad moved us up here when I was 13. He was transferred from a job in Florida (I had never even SEEN snow, and cold? was 50 degrees)... when I was 13, mom was 51 - she had me at the age of 38 and I was the OLDEST child. My brother was 4 years younger.

That was in 1968.

Mom got a job. At 51, she hit a good one. I kept thinking about that, and the encouragement and support on DU. It kept me trying, and trying, and trying.

So, at 55, I'm starting a new job. Possibly the best one I've ever had, with the best people I've ever worked with.

I'm rockin' on, TT, and even at 2 AM my time - enjoying the feeling. Keeping good hours, mostly (except tonight, which is celebratory..)

Actually, the only place you can SEE Russia is in the islands...... Little Diomede/Big Diomede around, I think, 30 miles apart - different continents, nations, time zones. Kinda cool. Alaska is huge, but we can't quite see Russia..........

except a buncha their pilots who come over every spring for training..... now, those folks are WORTH looking at! whoo!

Thanks, and we'll be looking into the house situation - hope to sell instead of lose it. Maybe that'll happen, maybe not -

but I've got my life back. Finally!

I hope you are feeling better and I am SURE the income will be a major relief! Best of luck to you! I have been out of work for a few months myself, and I know just how crappy it feels to not have a job. I have an interview Tuesday for a PT job, and one I can really make a case for their hiring me, so if I get it, I can at least go from unemployed to underemployed, and maybe in the not so distant future I can go for full employment. Wish me luck!

I'm so happy for you and your husband. Now we'll keep our fingers crossed that you can save your home.

We're heading out to Nome on Monday. Keep an eye on my website after the 25th for my Iditarod photos. It'll probably take me about a week to get them sorted and posted. Do you think Lance can do it again?

I have it under "favorites".....

I hope Lance does, but even if he doesn't, he's worth watching. I call him the Gentleman Musher for a reason - never met a nicer guy, and his kennels are impressive. That man truly loves his puppies.

Thanks for the congrats and crossed fingers, Blue - I hope we'll get the chance to sell before we have to do anything drastic. Have my eye on a little cabin off Farmer's Loop Road with 9 acres, affordable, woodstove, private well and a wood-fired sauna. It'd be 1/2 what our mortgage is now.

I agree with you about Lance. We spent some time talking with him out in Nome last March. He was really just wonderful. I think it's shameful that someone made a big deal about his medical marijuana, but it seems like he's hanging in there despite. I hope he gets totally toasted at the end. :)

200. Last time we were in Atigun Pass -
we saw a grizzly sow hopping - literally - around a wildflower meadow after ground squirrels. The sow was GOLDEN, not tan or brown. Most beautiful wild critter I've ever seen. She probably has a couple of new babies by now, so our sighting chances are fairly good.

We can camp at Coldfoot or motel it at the Yukon River bridge.

155. Usually when things start looking up in Interior Alaska -
you can be sure that a turnaround is coming in other states, because we're fairly behind economically. True, we didn't get hit as hard as others in the Lower 48, but everything is so very expensive here it takes us a while to play catchup. Our gas is still $3.39 a gallon, heating oil at $3.14 - and it's worse the farther from "town" you go.

I've used enough good karma for me, now I'm sending it out to my fellow DU'ers who are still looking - you WILL find a job you can thrive in, not just survive in!

159. Congratulations and you brought my daughter good fortune too.
Up thread I posted that my daughter had two interviews this week. I just got a call, she got hired. She will be the night staff person in a home for disabled adults. She's been looking for 4 months (just out of college.) She won't be making a ton of money, but she will make enough to pay rent in the apt. she shares with 4 others. She just got on food stamps this week too, so hopefully she will make enough to be ineligible next month. If not, she will have the food stamps to help her get by too. This was in the nick of time, because her school loans come due in June. this will give her a chance to build up a little cushion.
