Salmon no longer Kosher?
Rabbis disagree on kosher status of salmon

NEW YORK, March 8 (UPI) -- Jewish bagel lovers in New York said they disagree with a recent ruling by ultra-Orthodox rabbis taking lox, or smoked salmon, off the kosher list.

Chevra Mehadrin, a small group of ultra-Orthodox rabbis centered in Monsey, N.Y., said it added smoked salmon to the list of foods it does not believe should be considered kosher because the fish often contains anisakis, a small parasitic worm, the New York Post reported Monday.

The announcement drew the ire of several Orthodox rabbis in New York.

"This issue has been resolved in Jewish law for hundreds of years already," said Rabbi Moshe Elefant of the Orthodox Union.

10. That is always an excellent idea...since there is always money to be made in these
situations...if not importers of "kosher" Salmon to those that will "bless it" and thereby make it kosher.

And those that truly believe will fall for it every time.

4. My jewish wife often says that if you have 3 jews in the same room, you will have
at least 5 different opinions on everything.

So I'll pick out the worms......

5. Oh crap, I just bought some smoked salmon today!
Oh, wait, I'm not Jewish, and even if I were, the ultra-Orthodox folks would carry as much weight as Pat Robertson with me.

6. Please. Those nuts decided Romaine lettuce wasn't kosher a few years ago
because sometimes bugs are in the lettuce. So now, G-d help me, there is kosher romaine in the markets around Pico and Robertson. It's ludicrous.

7. What? Parasitic worms are not kosher? Who knew?
And where in the bible does it state that anisakis are not kosher?

14. Not a problem - but adding cream cheese to it would be
fish is considered neutral (parve)

12. Here's my question for the rabbis
Should there be a difference between wild salmon and farm-raised salmon?

Yeah, they both have the fins and scales as described in Leviticus, and so, would fit the original definition of "Kosher".

But the farm fishies aren't exactly living in the way G-d planned for salmon to live. So does that make a difference?
