General strikes can literally shut down nations.

Google the history of general strikes in Europe.

1. False assumption - General strikes are not done in the US
It seems to a a cultural thing.

Anecdotal story: Another DUer was publicizing one related to education recently. DU is the only place I ever saw anything about it and on campus we get all sorts of stuff put up.
