Woman admits selling 2 kids for 1 bird, $175

VILLE PLATTE, La. - A Louisiana woman has pleaded guilty to selling two children for a cockatoo and $175 in what her attorney called an attempt to do a good thing that went wrong.

"It was a really clumsy attempt at an adoption proceeding," said Steve Sikich, attorney for Donna Louise Greenwell of Pitkin. "She was trying to help the children and get them situated."

Greenwell, 53, was sentenced Monday to 15 months of hard labor on each of two criminal counts: sale of a minor. The sentences are to run concurrently.

The case centered on a 5-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl in Greenwell's custody.

4. no she's a repeat offender, why do you assume that she votes?
this woman is a lifelong criminal, i would have assumed that she lost the right to vote long ago as a result of her earlier convictions

6. I'm not 100%, but I'm pretty sure that felons in LA have their rights restored upon...
...final discharge from probation & parole or once they serve out their sentence.

7. Not all states take the right to vote away from criminals

13. Off topic, but I think felony convictions should negate voting rights at the fed level
If states want to let the felons among them vote for state office, I guess that's their thing.

3. wow, her attorney must be a fucking genius!!! i was wondering how this would come out
seems a slap on the wrist for someone who has been under suspicion of selling children for years

at the time of her arrest neighbors came forward and mentioned that they'd seen other children in her "care" that had subsequently disappeared

note that these children's parents are STILL disappeared, are they even alive? i will forever wonder if she and/or accomplice didn't dispose of the parents somehow

plus it doesn't sound as if anyone has followed up on the reports of other children that passed thru her hands...

the D.A. just wants a quick settle but 15 months for ADMITTED selling of two kids in the single digit age groups, by a habitual offender...ye gods...

if i ever get arrested for some stupid/heinous crime i DEFINITELY want her lawyer, that's a hell of a deal considering her crime

5. Well. They are only children after all (probably not the supercool white kind) and she was
you know, "only trying to help" according to her attorney.

10. Yes, because "supercoool white kind" of kids are never
mistreated or sexually abused or abandoned or beaten. Racism is alive and well on DU.

11. Oh, my. I'm getting the vapors thinking about how the white race has been discriminated against
But of course, that is not what this is about.

For fucks sake. Are you a logical fallacy professional or do you just play one on television?

Nowhere in my statement did I say white children are *never* abused. But you knew that. Just like, if you read and comprehend anything more challenging than the funny pages, you know that average sentences for the abuse or murder of a white child are greater than those for minority children.

So while you have no basis in your assumption that anyone believes the abuse or killing of a white child any less horrifying, I do have some basis for hypothesizing that the lenient sentence handed the piece of human filth in this story is statistically consistent with the abuse of minority children.

You know - statistics. They're all sciencey and stuff. Look em' up. You can use the Google on the internets.

8. How on earth was that a clumsy attempt at adoption?
She sold the kids, that was not clumsy, it was very intentional.
