Canadians good sports about women's hockey, less so for mens hockey....
Edited on Sat Feb-27-10 11:44 AM by Captain Hilts
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/26/AR2010022605610.html

...
They turned out Friday for the men's semifinal between the United States and Finland -- not in droves, but in respectable numbers for a game in which Canada was not involved. And these were not fans who arrived early to the Canada- Slovakia game; the arena is completely emptied between games.

Nope, these were folks who had tickets and a dream -- a dream of seeing the United States lose to Finland. And my, were they unhappy for much of the day, until Antii Miettinen ruined Team USA's shutout with 5 minutes 14 seconds to play. Then Canada Hockey Place erupted.

Team USA's first-period barrage began so early and lasted so long that the hometown fans never even had time to put together a good "We want Finland" chant. Instead, they sat, stunned, silent and somewhat sullen, as the Americans scored six unanswered goals and held on for a 6-1 victory and a berth in Sunday's gold medal game.

...the Canadians have a lot of stars, and a lot of expectations. Their fans certainly expect nothing less than a gold medal here, a burden the U.S. team didn't face when this tournament began last week. They also expect Team Canada to avenge last Sunday's 5-3 loss to the Americans in pool play, a stunning result that left the entire nation deflated and more than a little angry.

1. I think you're giving this far more importance
than Canadians do. It's just a game, and the country won't fall apart if we lose. Millions of us have no interest whatever in hockey.

Some of us have lived here all our lives. Your impression just may not be 100% correct.

I'm not anti-Olympics, they're meant to take the place of war, and that's a good thing.

Why are you always looking for a fight?

we were doing at hosting these Olypmics. They're all still there, go have a look. The only 'fight' I'm in is the one defending Canadians trying their hardest. Just like I do for anyone else.

That was your title.

The article in question has no bearing on how the reaction will be in a game that hasn't happened yet in comparison to one that has.

7. It's not a big deal to most Canadians.
There are always some people that are sports-mad, but there are millions of others that never bother with it.

Sunday afternoon in February, not much else to do unless people want to shovel their driveways... so people may well watch the Olympics...but that's it.

There's far more concern about the upcoming budget.

I turned on my TV and saw him. I was dumb-founded.

Recently, at a party here in DC, a friend who has uber-cable for hockey and I were trying to describe him to other folks at the party, so we tuned in Coach's corner and her did not disappoint! "Now, you kids watching at home, you don't hold someone down on the ice to punch them...."

3. Maybe they read the articles where the American player said he 'hates'
the Canadian team, and another 'oh yes, we dislike them'. Brodeur's response was to laugh and call hate a pretty strong word, saying it would all work itself out on the ice. But, how do you know the fans were even from Canada?

9:30 remaining in the final period, they allowed Slovakia to gradually get 2 goals, to narrow it to 3-2 with a few minutes remaining.

Slovakia outshot Canada 14-2 in the final 9 minutes, and almost tied it in regulation.

I don't know if Canada slacked off and began looking ahead to the final, but they barely averted a disaster.
