Is Cali in danger of a tsunami? Just heard an advisory went out
for S. Cali because of the earthquake in Japan. I only caught the tail end of the statement. Can anyone fill us in?

1. If you hear the sirens, head for the hills.

7. Even if you don't hear the sirens, watch the animals. They'll go inland.
They somehow instinctively know about these things.

3. Chile is getting nailed repeatedly with aftershocks.
Firefox has an addon that allows you to see alerts - Chile hasn't really stopped shaking yet.

The waves will be moving up the coast, not into it.

8. Remember that monster natural gas explosion in Mexico City about 30 years ago?
There was an explosion in the sewer system of Mexico City years and years ago. As I recall hundreds of people were killed. It was really a tragedy. That said I always imagined that somewhere in the city, just at the moment of the explosion, some poor guy was sitting on the throne and to this day blames himself for all that damage, death, and destruction.

28. Those are tsunami travel times
Add the local time for the Chilean earthquake to these values to get when the tsunami wave would arrive at a given location.

e.g. if the Chilean earthquake was at 2 AM in your time zone and it takes 15 hours to get there by the map, it would arrive at 5 PM local time

30. No, it is the number of hours after the tsunami was generated in Chile's earthquake.
So, basically, it is the number of hours after the tsunami started. It gives you a rough estimate of when the tsunami will hit each area.

13. Not "Frisco", especially
And the first A in "Nevada" is pronounced like the A in "Laddie", not the A in "Father".

Also, "SHICK-ah-go", not "CHICK-ah-go".

But on the East Coast, "Fluffya"* is fine for where I live.

--d!
* "Fluffya" = Philadelphia.

18. When I lived in Indiana, I never heard anyone call Indianaplis "Indy"
The people I knew from that city called it "Naptown".

But no one refers to the Naptown 500.

Outsiders like to use what they think are the in-group nicknames, unaware that members of the in-group are cringing. That's the way it goes.

going to move to "Cali." She was quite surprised when I told her that calling it "Cali" would mark her as a new arrival. "All my friends call it "Cali," she countered. I reminded her that all her friends lived in Minnesota, which I now call "Minnie." I live here now. Maybe I can start a trend.

20. I heard we are not highly susceptible to dangerous tsunamis in SoCal
because our shore drops off so steeply at the coast. Apparently tsunamis get biggest with shallow water that goes WAY out. Like FL and the easern seaboard. We just have a steep drop to the briny deep.

29. Bay Area TV weather folk are advising people to avoid the
coast and bay shore areas today. This is the first time I have ever heard "new" organizations advising this.

My guess is they just forgot to add the clause "tourists from land locked areas, as usual, are exempt from this warning.

I remember in 1963, after the Alaska quake TV news showing people out at Ocean Beach walking way out past the tide line. Back then they were calling it a tidal wave.

41. Not to quibble, but the Alaska quake was 1964,
and there was severe tsunami damage as far south as California.

From Wiki...

Twelve people were killed by the tsunami in Crescent City, California, while four children were killed on the Oregon Coast at Beverly Beach State Park.<5> Other towns along the U.S. Pacific Northwest and Hawaii were damaged. Minor damage to boats reached as far south as Los Angeles.

Since the entire Earth vibrated as a result of the quake, minor effects were felt worldwide: several fishing boats were sunk in Louisiana and water sloshed in wells in Africa.<6>

so the wave will probably be small. I live on the third story in an apartment in Long Beach, so I'm totally safe. I'll keep an eye on water levels.
