Republican comes clean on affair with mother-in-law
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/02/georgia_county_elects_republican_who_slept_with_mother_in_law.php?ref=fpb

Meet newly minted Rep. Daniel Stout.

His campaign Web site touts his conservative, pro-family bona fides. "I believe Paulding County wants someone who will stand strong for the conservative principles we've always believed in ... lower taxes, limited government, personal responsibility, and valuing Life from the womb until natural death," he says.

But, as the writer Tom Crawford of Capitol Impact noted this week, Stout "has been compelled to address a personal incident from 10 years ago: he had an affair with his first wife's mother while his first wife was pregnant with their daughter. Stout and his first wife subsequently divorced."

In a statement to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Stout apologized and said, "This humbling experience changed my life dramatically."

He also said the relationship with his mother-in-law "was stopped short of 'sex.'"

33. Why are we offended?
As a moral issue this doesn't bother me in the least, except breaking vows. It makes sense he is attracted to someone that looks and smells like the women he loves. If he were to cheat with anyone so carelessly, it should be his mother-in-law, not some outsider. It is with someone he is around alot, maybe even lived with her(?), go places with her. I find this more tasteful than loving a sibling in incest.

The only issue is breaking the marriage vow, if that was a vow to honor. Some people make up their own vows, so........... I just don't see this as a big issue.

38. You don't see a problem with him having an affair with his wife's mother?
This isn't just any old affair. Suppose that the affair had produced children? Imagine how it split up his wife's family, and the long lasting repercussions. Plus, he did this while his wife was pregant with her mother's grandchildren. I mean, come on.

42. Nah, I don't see it
An affair with any strange women could have produced a child as well and split up his family worse. He was keping it in the family, so to speak, the best choice. I don't defend him for breaking a marriage vow, or if MIL husband was alive. I just think Americans are a bit hung up on sexual issues, and they see this type of cheating as a taboo. I think it an excellant choice, and sorry it wasn't an open choice with his wife involved, or this wouldn't be an issue.

53. Sorry.....
Sorry, but my views don't have to be your views, and apparently they aren't. I am a psychologist adept at analyzing the human condition, and not a troll as you paint me. I see nothing wrong with a person being attracted to his mother-in-law that looks like his wife and smells like his wife. Do you know what pheromones are, and how they interact with attraction. In any case, that is my opinion.

The guy broke a vow, maybe, and if he did he might break other laws or rules to have his way. Interesting the right and the Christians are not making issues out of all the sexual conduct happening with its members, like they did with Clinton. Hypocrites.

...a case of a so-called family values conservative who couldn't live up to those values, all the while casting those "values votes". This should be trumpeted day in and day out until these hypocrites are exposed for what they are.

97. OK...
(puts on biology student hat)

For those of you playing at home: pheromones are smells/scents/odors. They're not always conciously perceived, and they are not always pleasant, but they pack a PUNCH. Smell is the strongest trigger of memory...think about it. The term 'leading by the nose' has more truth to it than you may think.

I watched some those extremely erudite programs they had on The Learning Channel about pheromones and the amazingly powerful (and not-very-well understood) role they play in sexual attraction.
They DO cause people to completely bypass the cerebrum and process pretty much with the gonads and the primitive part (referred to hereafter as the 'lizard') of the brain..."Smell GOOD. F#*K!!"

It's difficult to accept this, since sex and the concepts of love and fidelity have become very entangled issues. They all arise from different sections of the brain and often don't mesh well.

I do see your point; the pheromones that attracted him to his MIL would be very similar to those which originally attracted him to his wife. The lizard part of his brain wouldn't give a rat's ass about 'vows', 'fidelity', 'morality' or anything else of that nature, since it wouldn't even be able to be aware of such abstract concepts, let alone understand them.

This is what leads women to be attracted to 'bad' guys...they throw off some very powerful pheromones denoting virility and that they are the biggest baddest mofo on the block, which is what one wants for the progenitor of one's offspring...even if the woman has absolutely NO INTENT of reproducing. Her 'lizard brain' doesn't/can't know this; it just does what it what it was evolved to do.
***

I do gotta admit though, even with my biology student hat on, there is a bit of a squick factor (I realize this is conditioned thinking).
That, and the whole 'taking vows' thing. That's breaking promises, which doesn't go over well whether it involves sex or anything else.

105. This is the kind of shit that makes people ridicule psychology.
Edited on Sat Feb-27-10 04:55 AM by Caliman73
I have worked in mental health for 16 years and my wife is a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist. We saw your post and gagged. Attraction is one thing. Anyone can be attracted to anyone else or anything, but attraction does not exist in a vacuum. Any psychologist or sociologist worth a damn would know that. Pedophiles are attracted to pre-pubescent individuals. The attraction mechanism is the same as that of heterosexual adults to each other or homosexual adults to each other. The difference is in the social and psychological implications of the attraction and any behavior on the individuals directly involved and those who share in the consequences.

There isn't any type of infidelity that is better than another. One is certainly not more acceptable than the other. I would even argue that the sense of betrayal would be far greater for the spouse who was cheated on to know that they were betrayed not only by their marriage partner, but also by a parent. These are presumably the individuals who are expected to be the most loyal and interested in the person's well being.

Pheromones are chemical attractants that serve to arouse sexual feelings in animals. Yes, we are animals, but what separates us from less developed animals is that we are not slaves to our sexual urges and the effects of pheromones or rutting. We have no objection to open relationships but an affair is not an open relationship it is simply a betrayal of trust. As a psychologist you should know that trust and a sense of security are fundamental to a person's well being and the success of any relationship.

108. You're a psychologist and you think that having an affair with the MIL...
is less disturbing to the family than an affair with an outside woman who might have a kid at some point? Psychologically, how do you think the wife feels when the "other woman" turns out to be her trusted mom?

That once again a Repub is espousing Christian values to lead the faithful to the voting booth. However, this Repub is not walking his talk, a liar who got caught. His personnel motives for public office need to examined and checked. I could give a flying fuck if he was dating his wife's sister or uncle, mother in-law or father in-law, he's another example of Repub hypocrisy on family values, no shame and no brains.

27. Not surprisingly, the mother in law didn't win Mother of the Year.
I'm trying to think of something worse a husband or a mother could do than have an affair while their wife/daughter was pregnant.

Nope, can't think of anything.

He divorced his wife to marry her mother, who was just a few years older than he was. They stayed married.

LEV 20:14 And if a man take a wife and her mother, it is wickedness: they shall be burnt with fire, both he and they; that there be no wickedness among you.

Now, a couple of things about this. It could well be interpreted to mean if a man takes a wife and her mother at the same time, it is wickedness. And note that all three are doomed.

70. Well, Miss Beverly Hills ,Lauren Ashley, is a "biblical scholar".
She was quoting Leviticus about Gays being condemned to death. Maybe she can chime in on this subject and enlighten us on the virtues of "family values".

69. By framing these sorts of incidents in terms of the act(s) committed...
...these matters become far too trivialised.

With Hollywood as the gold standard, who is fornicating with whom is nothing more than salacious gossip. Easily forgiven, quickly forgotten.

The point that needs to be hammered is the breach of trust, not which tab got inserted into what slot.

I mean, look at how many people hate their in-laws...there's jokes constantly made about that. It's refreshing to know there's at least one who was able to get along well with his mother-in-law.
