Slam Dunked A Tea Bagger Tonight

Waiting in line at the grocery store an hour ago the customer in front of me was chattering with the cashier when out of the customers mouth came Obama will waste the time of lawmakers tomorrow trying to sell them on his socialism health care program he babbled for about 40 more seconds and I had enough and asked him..... If you lose your job tomorrow will you lose your benefits to drive on the public roads???...he said no....whats your point... I said you will lose you health insurance if you lose your job wont you....yes in most cases... I said why is it ok the government will make sure we have roads to drive on to find new work but there are many who don't think it is essential that we are also protected from a health crisis until we find new work....he said AHHHH!!!....I said you should think of all the things we don't give up when we lose our jobs like Police protection...Fire protection...Military protection....why is it in your mind ok to call the most essential of life's gift to be reduced to a benefit???.....He said Obama is a SOCIALIST....and not even an American citizen...I just interrupted his rage and pulled out my cell phone and asked him if he would like me to call Sarah Palin so he can get a refill on his idiotic talking points....

He called me crazy and left in a huff.....no answers no sollutions just babble

4. Do you really think
You changed his mind or even budged him one millimeter or was it simply to satisfy your frustration. Every time I see this type of thing happen I think just how fruitless it looks and how it makes us progressives look like cooks.

5. What kind of cooks???

...The one thing this speaking up does it it gets them to think about what they are going to say the next time they want to talk garbage politics in public.... I really do believe these types don't believe the crap they speak but they are to narrow minded to do anything about it... There are other motives that are the foundation of their beliefs...like Chris Mathews has said...where are the BLACK TEA BAGGERS....there are none...

8. I tend to think everyone in the grocery store looks like a cook
Why would speaking the truth makes someone look like a kook?

21. Everytime I see this, I am glad that fools don't monopolize the conversations
with only their own viewpoint represented. I am tired of walking on eggshells around stuff like this.

Guy wants to voice his opinion - fine. The poster wants to voice theirs in opposition - even better.

9. You obviously don't live near me.
Or patronize the family owned small businesses I do because they sell good product and you can rely on them to be there next week.
Or go to the local general store (yes they've got every thing from plumbing works to a fresh meat counter) where the old guys sit around in ladder backed chairs and watch the races on Sunday.....

Cause I hear this crap constantly.

It must be nice to live in a magical fairy-land where people aren't bigoted, small-minded and obnoxious because they assume everybody around them is bigoted, small-minded and obnoxious. Where rainbows and liberal free thinking sprout delicately enchanted from the mouths of luminous, beautiful people.

The morning after Obama was elected, I pulled up to the general store. Some old guy, I'd seen around, but didn't know, in a ball cap and coveralls ran up to my car and plastered a picture of Obama on the window. He started shouting at me: "Ain't that purty? Ain't that the purtiest thing you ever seen?!!!" With this big, fake rictus grin on his face.

I didn't know what he was getting at, since he had shocked me by slamming the picture into my car window. So I took him literally and said, "Yes, it's nice." It was only after his face fell and he took a step back that I realized he was just being an ass.

You want one of those conversations? Feeling shortchanged there buddy? Come on down. We need an extra hand on the farm. We can offer room and board and more visits with jackasses who make assumptions about other people's view points than you can shake a stick at.

15. Ah, North Carolina...
beautiful country out there. Really good dirt for farming too. But some of the people... meh, not so much. I live in Western Massachusetts and it's kinda the same here. Small farming town, lotsa old, white bigots. A lot of roads in town named after their families. I have a biracial daughter, so i here whispers. Everyone thinks Mass is some freakin hippie haven or something. But i think whenever you get out into the countryside you start to have to deal with intolerance.

it's a bummer. I try and smile and be a good example. I speak up when i think it won't endanger me or my family. I appreciate having an old school Town Meeting style government. Stand up, speak your peace, meet your neighbors, vote.

We just had a major storm here. Lost power for a couple days (just got it back 2 hours ago and here i am on DU!) 28" of snow in 48 hours. But the community really pulled together. I have a gas stove so was able to melt water to flush toilets for the neighbors. But nobody's well pump worked and some folk ran out of water. No heat for others. No way to cook for some. Everyone came together, we sorted it out. It was all cool. I get a shower and get to clean out the fridge tonight!

cheers...

20. my family is set.
I worry about my older neighbors, but i check in and make sure i call when there's a storm.

We have double thick super insulated walls, so the temp in our house never got below 66 degrees. Just using a gas range and burning candles actually warms the house, if you can believe it. The roads and our driveway (we live on a back lot) have been a nightmare though. Even with studded snows. We need to get a 4x4 that's cheap and gets good mileage. If the US auto industry could come out with one of THOSE, we'd be in business. Right now there's 3 inches of slush on some roads and we're expecting another storm tomorrow.

Ugly. And this coming from a guy who lived in Buffalo for 9 years...

7. If they're gonna offer their uninformed, unsolicited opinion
Then they might as well have to hear the facts. I realized a long time ago that these types are a bunch of loudmouths, but once you call 'em on their shit, they'll shut up or call you crazy. My buddy is a middle-aged punk rock guy who was forced to join the Marines by his crazy fundie parents in the late-80s. Because of his ever-changing hair color (alternating between jet black, green or blue), one would never guess he was in the service, a fact he uses to his advantage whenever some RW'er starts spouting off the Obama-commie-socialist-fascist crap in public. He lives in a pretty conservative town where this happens pretty frequently to him, especially at the grocery store and I think he loves the challenge!

person, someone other than yourself, why would it be your responsibility to challenge them.

The conversation belongs to someone else.

know the answer.

11. I rarely, if ever, have anyone say anything to anyone else in a checkout
line loud enough to hear.

On those rare instances, they are talking to a friend or relative who came in with them. In that case, I think it totally inappropriate for me to insert myself into their conversation, regardless of the topic.

It is their chat, not mine. I don't have to agree with them, nor do I feel an overpowering urge to "enlighten" them, because it is their chat.

14. LOVED IT!! Great response.... but you know you can't change these people's minds...
Even faced with facts and reason these types won't change. The only thing that will change is when he ends up in the hospital and his insurance company refuses to pay for needed treatments.

Only when they are affected personally do they consider the consequences of their pov.
