I've never seen anything like this - Local 10 in Florida
reporting on the death of their Executive Producer Chris Gilks - I mean that lady was bawling live on air at the end there.
Chris recently won an Emmy while in hospital for a program on the Amazon. More than five minutes of their news was about their staffer. The news is now about the news people and yes losing Chris Gilks at 42 is very sad for them.

5. Too sad indeed
and you're right she wasn't exactly bawling but she could barely speak and the tears were flowing.

3. There was a time (when I was in J-School) that journalists were taught to
stay out of the story. Infotainment has made devastating strides in knocking down that barrier, unfortunately. :(

4. Sad, but wrong
This is poor journalism not because it sits an old stodgy journalistic rule on its head, but because it simply highlights that the "news" is more about what is important to the deliver than about what is important to the audience. Unless they tearfully eulogize everyone who has a coworker, family, and friends, it elevates the newscasters "above" their public. I find it extremely tacky and huberistic. Now, when it is a beloved public figure such as a Walter Cronkite--a case can be made that the public interest would be served by news coverage, but even then, the presenter should not be so self indulgent as to make the story about their personal grief.
