29. USA has 7 gold medals so far this olympic games, Canada has 6
but a Canadian friend of mine told me on the phone the other day that "the only medal that matters is Men's Hockey".

Good luck with that, these are guaranteed to be some exciting playoffs :)

That's a rather far-shifted goalpost from your original statement "believe it or not, Canadians don't live and die hockey. "... which was just plain ridiculous. If all you're saying now is that within the 30 million people in Canada you can find some who don't, then fine. My aunt never really got into it, so there's one right there.

Take a closer look. Other protesters in the streets of Vancouver are protesting cuts in health care. All of this "own the podium talk" is just the same old "bread and circuses" that was used to turn USA'ers into patriotic losers willing to give up everything for a military that can't stop 15 guys with box cutters. Oh yes, we have troops all over the world be we're afraid to step outside because some terrorist will get us and we don't have health care to fall back on.

oops: I guess he's a Prime Minister.

14. But...
Harper only has a minority government. We don't trust him enough to give him a majority so he can't just ram through anything he wants. He's treading carefully right now (ie being more moderate) because he wants to gain enough of the people's trust to get a majority. Thing is, every time he feels confident, he'll let some of his true colours show through. Unfortunately, he hasn't screwed up big enough to completely lose the people's confidence. We've also seen how the health insurance industry is screwing everyone in the US so if Harper tries any large scale changes or if he cuts too much, then he's out. We wouldn't even have to wait for another election. We could do a vote of non-confidence.
I can't foresee our health care going away any time soon. If it gets cut too much, the opposition will make "increased health care funding" a part of their platform.

It will be more schools closed, more cuts to health and increased fees for everything else. I just don't know what fools keep electing that evil bastard in.

43. slight difference
Is that we don't vote directly for a prime minister, he (or she) is just the leader of the party with the most seats (they took 37.7% of the popular vote in the last election). That's the downside of having four political parties represented. The upside is you don't get quite as ridiculous a set of policies.
Also our health care is provincially controlled.

69. we don't vote directly for a president here either... our pres is elected by the electoral college
... the American democracy has always been more about perception than reality. The American presidential election is at its very basic level a popularity contest, and equally as binding. The fact that a presidential campaign takes basically over 1 year, speaks volumes about the American political system being designed to cater to perception.

118. Canadian "ridings" give similar problems to the electoral college system...
in that it does not end up being a truly representative democratic government. The numbers are all off.

The arbitrary nature of the electoral college system is a little more glaring, but the results are the same. The same could be said of having exactly two senators from every state, with the same voting power. It serves to make politics even more of a game than they would otherwise be.

And their economy is recovering reasonably well, too- not as well as Australia's (which never fell into recession) but considering the economic drag from the south, pretty remarkable all the same.

Lack of health care in America is a tragedy, and one with which the vast vast majority of Americans are furious. Of course I envy Canada's health care, and I understand their relief that they live with such a system rather than ours, but... people are dying, here, in this country, and I can't find that amusing.

ridiculous. Considering the population pool to get world class athletes from compared to others competing .... owning the podium was to a lot of us not realistic at all. Don't paint all 'Canucks' as bragging about anything. But we do love our athletes and they are doing just fine .......... loving watching all of them try their hardest.

165. Canada
Thanks to War Criminal Bush, we came to Canada in 2003. We became landed immigrants in 2007. We will apply for Canadian citizenship soon, but we will keep our American citizenship. How do we think of Canada? Where we live is beautiful, and our neighbors are wonderful people. What more can one want?

102. Wow, you really DON'T get it, do you...
It's NOT about the US, Canada or Russia, it's about the athletes.

It's about the courageous Georgian team who opted to stay and compete after the terrible tragedy that befell their team member and fellow countryman. It is about the courageous Canadian figure skater who's mother died of a sudden heart attack on the weekend and she went out on the ice last night and performed, not for Canada, but for her mother and is currently in third. These are but two examples of why it IS about the athletes and NOT about country.

I feel sorry for you that you don't get it.

Olympic Hockey is played by teams representing the athletes' respective countries. So when I say "I root for Russia" I'm not advocating for Vladimir Putin.

137. I could not have said it better, well done. What amazed me is that
someone from Canada actually thought 'own the podium' was a good idea. I told my sis who is here volunteering that I cannot believe VANOC allowed this and that I don't think even the US (with all due respect) would have come up with such a stupid idea.

My take is that crap was putting a lot of pressure on the athletes and they were not allowed to compete to the best of their abilities. That must affect them psychologically because of the high expectations of the organizers. I am rooting for all our athletes and for those who are here as our guests. I really want Charles Hamlin to win a medal in the 500 speed skating even though he is acclaimed to be better at the higher levels (but lost), bronze would be fine by me.

142. You know, I never 'got' why there seems to be a need to give a 'number'...
at all when it comes to the question "how many medals do you expect Canada (or which ever country) to win?". Instead of falling for that kind of question, I wish those who are asked would simply say they are proud of each and every athlete who have sacrificed a lot to be participating and we will celebrate them all regardless of where they place.

I know, I know it's a pipe-dream but wouldn't it be refreshing if there were answers like that instead of the numbers and inane, insulting phrases like "own the podium" that are the current responses.

114. Of course.
If you really want to hit me where I live, I'll help:

I'm obviously a Detroit Red Wings fan (the clues are all there.) The Detroit Red Wing's best player of all time is Steve Yzerman, who is presently the GM for Team Canada. Team Canada's coach is Mike Babcock, who happens to be the Detroit Red Wing's coach! So of course I have some love for Team Canada too.

Now then...Sidney Crosby ("the Crybaby") is the captain of the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins. The Pen's beat the Red Wings in last year's Stanley Cup Finals to take the Cup. Now then...my "sour grapes" (such as they exist) aren't as to Canada--I live in metro-Detroit! My sour-grapes are as to a) Sidney Crosby, and b) the perception that the NHL privileges North American hockey players over "Euros".

So what you should say is that I'm just salty 'cause Sid ("the Kid" is the nickname he prefers) eliminated my team in the SCF! Plus there are few Wings on Team Canada, and our best player (Pavel Datsyuk) and a hall of famer from the good old days (Sergei Federov) play for Russia.

So I am not being nationalistic about this--I'm being a "butthurt" homer!

And take their health care. *cough* I mean liberate their health care. How can we stand by and let people die of bad health care here when there's good health care just over the border. They are hoarding it I tell you, hoarding it.

The civilian casualties will be regrettable, but on the bright side we will save a lot on drone fuel.

Pretty hilarious making fun of poor and unemployed people that don't have insurance.

I was hoping for a rematch in the medal round, but now I'll be laughing when the Russians take these snotty fucks down.

134. You have no idea how many Canadians were - and are - rooting
for you guys to get real health reform. If you took a poll ...... it would be overwhelmingly for change. I think Vancouver is full of partiers and fans right now just completely wrapped up in it all ..... someone posted - the negativity against us for these Olympics has been heard right from the start. LOL at the description of us though.

144. I love the pic...so Canadian
I am American born, Canadian by choice. Never had any regrets moving here.

I think the Vancouver Olympics are the best Olympics I ever watched. They make me proud.

We Canadians would never give up our health care, our hockey, our beer and our water.

Tommy Douglas was voted in a poll the Most Important Canadian to ever lived. He gave us our health care in the 60's.
He was the Premier of Saskatchewan and is also Keifer Sutherland's grandfather.

The other day I watched on the news that we almost ran out of beer in the Vancouver Olympics. There was more beer sold in Vancouver this event than the Salt Lake City and Turin Olympics combined.. Yes we love our beer.

The health care is super. I am grateful that I didn't go bankrupt with my son and husband both having cancer at the same time...and dying within 18 months of each other. They had EVERY treatment that could be had and Palliative Care and Intensive care for 5 weeks for my son. The only cost was parking charges and TV rental.

My friends and I like to visit the USA, shop and vacation but we are truly happy living in our cold land filled with such beauty and good compassionate people. We think of our health care as civilized not socialized.

We love you Americans, even if you are a little crazy.

Here is a lovely video of our relationship with each other.

holding up a sign saying "... at least we have a city!" after their Super Bowl loss. Personally, I don't find it really funny. Lots of Americans actually do have health care, so this is really just a big FU to the 50 million least privilieged among us, not to mention all those thousands who die from lack of it. I guess Canadians can be real douchebags.

152. Not quite the same
I am pretty sure Katrina was not summoned by the people of New Orleans.

Where on the other hand, you, as a population, _choose_ not to have a decent healthcare system. As a nation you can and should be mocked for that choice.

It was Canada vs US. Not Canada vs. the people that don't have healthcare.

160. Just like the people of New Orleans chose...
not to have proper levees, and they should (and were) mocked for it. Your "blame the victim" shit is disgusting. The people of the US really don't have a choice in the matter. Polls have shown again and again that Americans were for the public option for example. But you deciding to mock a population that is being shat on and manipulated by its business-controlled government is uniquely disgusting and low. WTF is your problem? Your nationailsm comes before your humanity.

Believe me. I had to deal with scores of Canadians in a professional capacity for several years. It was eye-opening. If we ever get universal healthcare in the U.S., I hope it doesn't turn us into coddled douchebags like them. And we're bad enough already, lol. Still, we don't need to be worse.

150. Not even all Canadian gov't officials agree........
I read a story that the Premier of Newfoundland is coming to Florida for heart surgery. Explaining it to his constituents, he said "It's my health, it's my choice". That's sounds great, if you can afford to go to another country for the procedure. If not, you accept whatever the government gives to you, when it is available. I would just like our universal health care to give me another option other than Canada or Mexico.

The New England Journal of Medicine contains the research done by two Canadian doctors, Ottawa offers it all the time, but he has a condo there. Maybe he wanted to recuperate in the sunshine. Who knows.

157. The medical procedure WAS available in Canada....
Williams, instead, went to your system because he has a condo there and he had the big bucks to bump an American citizen down the list simply because he was the highest bidder. In the U.S. system, it's the wallet that counts, in Canada it is the need instead of the 'want'.

I wonder how many Floridians needing that same procedure wouldn't be on ANY list because they have either NO insurance or are under-insured because they can't afford the outrageous costs? More than a few I suspect yet a foreigner (Williams) can jump right in ONLY because he has the big bucks.

want all of you in the US to have our same health care. Ours is not perfect but it works. We went berserk when Campbell was looking for advice from the big pharma in the US and if he gets elected again, we will be joining you in having crappy medical care. Campbell is a drunk and he does it in Hawaii, thank goodness he got caught!
