Va. Legislator: Disabled Children Nature’s Revenge on Women Who Had Abortions


Here on Capitol Hill, it’s easy to forget sometimes that you’re only a stone’s throw from the Bible belt. Then some woman-hater with a cross on his chest crawls out into the light, and says something like this:

“The number of children who are born subsequent to a first abortion with handicaps has increased dramatically. Why? Because when you abort the first born of any, nature takes its vengeance on the subsequent children,” said (State Delegate Bob) Marshall, a Republican.

According a Capital News Service piece in the Staunton, Va., paper, The News Leader, Marshall, who hails from Manassass, went on:

“In the Old Testament, the first born of every being, animal and man, was dedicated to the Lord. There’s a special punishment Christians would suggest.”

The occasion was a press conference convened by a group of right-wing Republicans and evangelical Christians who are demanding that Virginia cease all funding to Planned Parenthood because the organization provides abortions. (The right has been building a campaign to defund Planned Parenthood for years. I wrote it about it for The Public Eye last year.)

At the press conference, members of Virginia Christian Action announced a petition to Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell that was signed by Rev. Pat Robertson and Rev. Jonathan Falwell, son of the late Rev. Jerry Falwell.

Most of Planned Parenthood’s services are more general gynecological care for women — often the only health care that poor and working-class women receive.

And we all know how right-wing Republicans feel about health care. And women. And we now know what at least one thinks of physically challenged people.

4. The thing I can not stand about these people

is they call themselves Christian. Do you think Jesus would say such things. Do you think Jesus would pass laws to take money away from food programs for children, money to help pay for fuel, money for schools, hospitals, and health insurance for the poor,medicaid.

No he wouldn't but yet these butt holes call themselves Christian. It is a wonder God or Jesus does not strike them all deaf and dumb with a bolt of lightening.Some times I swear I wish he would.

8. I am beyond mad. When I was in college - PP WAS my only healthcare.

It was the only time I would even consider going to the doctor. And they made me come back ever year for a checkup so I could get my birth control pills. And they checked my heart, my eyes, my ears. And they treated me with dignity and respect. They are alot more than an abortion clinic.

Plus - I have a 'disabled' child. She is wonderful, a gift to me because she made me open my eyes and appreciate how beautiful the small things in life are...the simple pleasures.

I don't know which statement pissed me off more - but I'll tell you what, when I get more composed, he will be hearing from me.

I truly believe that if there is a hell, people like McDonnell will end up there. They never learned the most important lesson in life - that ALL people are created equal.
