How Paul the Pirate describes his current operations in the Southern Ocean
http://www.evana.org/index.php?id=45921&lang=en

"This is a research project. We've decided to demonstrate our solidarity with the Japanese, Australian and New Zealand Research projects. Our primary objective is to research non-lethal means for defending whales. Of course this may include research into ship’s hull plate thickness, hull stress tests, and paint chip analysis, as well as observation of whaler behavior in response to olfactory stimulation.”

They've also tested the strength of carbon fiber-epoxy composite matrices and the patience of the Japanese whaling fleet captains, and they're about to determine the Japanese government's tolerance for piracy.

2. I've always said that it's just a matter of time before he kills somebody.
The veiled threats in his statement seem to indicate he's moving closer to that reality.

3. jmowreader - I'm backing Paul on this one, sorry.
I unrecommended this thread because you called Mr. Watson a pirate.

That's not appropriate.

Japanese whalers are the pirates, not Sea Shepard.

4. Watson sure the fuck LOOKS like a pirate
Let's see...he flies the Jolly Roger, he sends people out to entangle ship propellers and board other vessels, he calls himself an "anti-whaling pirate" (http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2008/jan/23/japan.australia) and he's sunk what, ten whaling ships? All he needs now is an eyepatch and a parrot.

5. The whalers are taking more than a few
they are selling the meat on the market using the pretext of 'scientific research' to kill endangered species. Species that are specifically prohibited no less by a world wide ban.

7. This is SUPPOSED to be the Jolly Roger?

This is the Jolly Roger

I think I can tell from the Sea Shepherd from the Jolly Roger.

11. No, you will call him Captain Paul Watson
of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

Not a pirate.

And no, their flag is not a Jolly Roger. It's a lookalike but if you look VERY carefully, it represents three things. I'll leave it up to you to figure out.

18. I'm not arguing that Paul Watson's argument is wrong because he's a pirate.
Edited on Tue Feb-16-10 07:58 PM by HiFructosePronSyrup
I'm just saying that Paul Watson is a pirate, and even he agrees.

So... ad hominem.

That's something else you don't understand and should look up on wikipedia or elsewhere.

Lulz.

21. When he shows his masters papers, I shall call him Captain
He doesn't have a commercial ship captain's license. Unless someone on that ship has one, they aren't legally entitled to be out there in the first place. I THINK Bethune has one, but he can't legally master more than one ship.

He also refers to the population of this earth as "the human virus." (http://www.seashepherd.org/news-and-media/editorial-070504-1.html)

On the high seas with no license? Pirate sounds pretty accurate to me.

20. Watson admits he used the Jolie Rouge as his logo's model
There isn't exactly a standard for pirate flags--a black one with a skull in the middle is good enough to prove you're a pirate.

10. If you read the Sea Shepherd's mission
Established in 1977, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (SSCS) is an international non-profit, marine wildlife conservation organization. Our mission is to end the destruction of habitat and slaughter of wildlife in the world's oceans in order to conserve and protect ecosystems and species.

Sea Shepherd uses innovative direct-action tactics to investigate, document, and take action when necessary to expose and confront illegal activities on the high seas. By safeguarding the biodiversity of our delicately-balanced ocean ecosystems, Sea Shepherd works to ensure their survival for future generations.

http://www.seashepherd.org/who-we-are/

I think their mission goal is clear.

They have the mandate from the UN -

I guess you have some kind of reading comprehension problem, but that's nothing new for the anti-environmentalists/anti-endangered-species

12. It's not the goal that's the issue, but the means.
I don't think you've got a reading comprehension problem, I think you're being purposefully obtuse.

22. And it's probably going to be him, along with his crew
The Japanese have a pretty slick tactic this time out: They sent a ship to the southern ocean to picket Watson while the working ships were out hunting whales.

I don't think the Japanese are going to picket Watson with a whaler next season. They've got four Kongo-class destroyers (the Japanese version of the US Navy's Arleigh Burke class destroyer), two slightly smaller Shirane-class destroyers, two Haruna-class destroyers, three Tachikaze-class destroyers, two Takanami-class destroyers, nine Murasame-class frigates, eight Asagiri-class frigates, and eleven Hatsuyaki-class frigates. That's the Japanese Navy's current heavy surface combatant force--and ALL those ships can put a Mk.46 torpedo in the water.

More to the point, with just a few more prop foulings and boardings the Japanese will have more than sufficient grounds to officially declare Sea Shepherd a pirate group and start hunting their vessels.
