Plans unveiled for world's largest yacht

<snip>
Barely out of a global economic meltdown, the world's remaining billionaires have been presented with the largest and most extravagant superyacht yet.

The floating palace has been designed at a whopping 656 feet (200 meters) in length -- as long as two football fields end-to-end.
<snip>

Opulent displays of wealth like this make me want to :puke:

Although, I do hear that Somalia is a very nice place for a luxury cruise :smoke:

2. The only thing that could make it worse would be to see the head of
Goldman-Sachs or the head of a health insurance company buy it.

3. That's even larger than Paul Allen's "yacht."
Allen's "Octopus" (pictured below) is "only" 416 ft.

13. Larry Ellison's yacht is bigger than Paul's
452 feet

Look at the fuel truck feeding it. Also, check out all the space for the "toys".

This will result in a trickle-down effect that will benefit everyone! :sarcasm:

8. What does "need" have to do with it?
If there's a market for it, it will be built...

...and that's fine.

16. So you have no problem with opulent, arrogant displays of wealth?
Some rich asshole will spend nearly a billion dollars on this luxury yacht. A billion dollars could go a very long way to building schools in impoverished areas, feeding the hungry, health care for those without access, etc. You're goddamned right, I have a problem with the wealthy sitting in their ivory towers throwing their money around just because they can, while all around them people are starving, dying from lack of health care, etc.

10. So where do I get a billion dollars?
The people who designed it say it could cost between $624 million and $1 billion, and it's 656 feet long. That makes it about the same size as the Olympic Voyager, so you know what I'm thinking...get them to fit it out with 50 staterooms and two fighting chairs, and make a cruise ship for the moderately-soiled rich.

17. From the article
"The people left with a lot of money have more power now, as there is less demand."

Oh boy. Just what the rich people needed. More power.

"Size matters." Yeah, that's what the Hummer drivers say too. How small of a winkie can a guy have to feel the need to make up for it with a 656-foot yacht? The mind boggles.

21. What if someone like Warren Buffett bought it?
Or Bill Gates?

Philanthropists to the core yet could afford ten of them.

I don't hate people who are uber rich, nor do I begrudge them their expensive toys. I do detest when they don't do otherwise good things with a chunk of their riches.

Why don't we wait and see who steps up to purchase this before wishing them to be taken by pirates for ransom.
