Shami says whites unwilling to take on jobs in factories
By GROMER JEFFERS JR. / The Dallas Morning News

Democratic candidate for governor Farouk Shami said Friday that white people are not willing to work in factories and as a result, Hispanic labor is essential to the Texas economy.

Shami, a Houston hair care magnate, made the statements during a taping of Inside Texas Politics, which airs at 9 a.m. Sunday on WFAA-TV (Channel 8).

"A majority of the people are going to be Hispanic and African-American," he said. "You don't find white people who are willing to work in factories. And our history proves lots of time when ... the white people come to work in a factory they either want to be supervisors or they want to be paid more than the average person. And unfortunately they exit."

Later, Shami told another interviewer – seeking his reactions on comments made by Republican candidate Debra Medina – that a conspiracy of government involvement in the Sept. 11 attacks was possible...

1. Mr. Shami should perhaps review his high school history books generally,
and the chapters on textile workers especially, and in his free hours he might want to peruse Studs Terkel's WORKING.

Just a suggestion.

5. He's in a primary against Bill White, former mayor of Houston.
Should be no contest.

16. 9/11 Truthers are perhaps as dumb and disgusting as Teabaggers
Hope the people of Texas have another viable Democrat to vote for. This guy is vile.

6. I'm a white Texan.....
.....born and reared and still here! I worked in factories for 30 years. No A/C and often no heating. I earned a good living. Problem is, the factory jobs have disappeared from our community.
The people I know would love to work in a factory if they could find a job in one! This guy is out of touch.

8. Classic RW meme used by empolyers to justify slave wages
for undocumented workers! Along the lines of McCain's "People won't pick lettuce for $50 an hour" remark! Shame on him for falling into that mindset...

9. I'm sure they'd be willing to work in a factory -
but having to move to China to work in one is a dealbreaker.

10. Shami appears to have the political skill of Conan the Barbarian
What a completely idiotic thing to say while running for the Governor of a state like Texas. Rule number ONE while on the stump - never use generalizations when discussing ANY ethnic or racial group. The only generalization that is EVER true is that all generalizations are NEVER absolutely true. It would seem that poking white Texans in the eye is not a great strategy for winning hearts and minds.

13. Vinnie, I would say that he has the pol. skill of...
drum roll: Mortimer Snerd

Younger folk, if you don't recognize the name, google Edgar Bergen.

Texas has become the COMIC RELIEF STATE.

As for checking history books, remember that Texas textbooks do not resemble history as the rest of us know it.

Conan the Barbarian DID get himself elected governor of California, so apparently stuupid does sell in elections.

17. I wonder Republicans put this guy up to running as a Democrat.
This guy is a real piece of ... work.

It's almost as if someone said "let's get a guy to run for governor on the Democratic side with a Muslim sounding name, a set of objectionable fringe beliefs - someone who will make the GOP crazies look less crazy."

18. Bill White is going to win the Dem primary. Won't even be a contest.
Mr. Shami is trying to pull votes from The Valley and the African-American communities, but Bill White is a shoo-in for the primary. And I think Bill White's chances are much better running against Goodhair than Kay Bailey.
