Fox News - it's everywhere!!@#$!@#$!@#$
I just got back from a Valentine's Day getaway with my wife, and I had to vent about the constant presence of Fox News on what seems like every public TV in this country.

Apparently all the TVs in this particular hotel would automatically tune to the Fox channel when they're turned on....how do they do that?? The TVs at most hotels I've stayed at usually return to the first channel when you turn them off. Not here - no matter what channel you're watching when you turn the TV off, it returned to Fox when it was turned on again. That drove me nuts!!! I tried going through the menu options to see if there was a default channel setting somewhere, but no luck - it appears to be set by the provider.

I am SO sick of being confronted with the Fux propaganda EVERYWHERE - at my work, at car dealers, restaurants, hotels.....etc., etc., etc!!!

It was blaring in the breakfast room with no remote in site, but I managed to switch the channel manually before other people came in the room.

I think the only way we can put an end to this (other than by changing the channel when we can) is to get to an ala carte cable bill...then, only the true die hards will explicitly pay for it.

1. I feel your pain, but....
a la carte would suck. The niche channels are supported by the big channels, so we'd lose things like Science Channel. We'd be left with a few "popular" channels, and that's it.

3. Complain
Tell the establishment that it's not acceptable. Fox news has to be challenged.

I wrote this eight months ago. Surprisingly, someone On DU suggested turning on Fox at different businesses.

I don't watch Fox, and would rather not pay for it, or even have to acknowledge its existence in my house.

Edited on Sun Feb-14-10 11:08 PM by Arugula Latte
I stayed at a H.I. here in Portland, Ore., and the TV automatically went to Fox. Needless to say, we won't be going back to that hotel.

35. I hope you let management know about this. . .
both the local vendor and the corporate office. If their aim is to provide news as soon as someone turns on the television, they can find a more reliable source of information instead of assuming the entire American public wants to be fed right-wing propaganda.

I really wonder if Faux has some deal going with businesses in this country - and then they get to count every room as "viewers". . .

10. Be sure to write negative reviews of the hotels that show Fox!
I just put a review up on TripAdvisor.com about our stay and specifically mentioned the issue.

If you travel (or eat out) at an establishment that broadcasts Fox, I suggest you post a review at TripAdvisor complaining about it. Right now, it's running about 100-1 with people complaining that there was NO Fox News available....ugh! Do a search for Fox News & see what I mean...it's pretty depressing :-(

You go down for breakfast and the big ole' TV is tuned to Fox. Do the people that work there think that is what we want? If there is no one watching, I'll get up and change it. To ANYthing else.

12. My dentist had it on -
The tv screen is just inches from the patient's face. I was about to start $8000 worth of work (veneers).
He would not change the channel, so I got out of the chair, left his office, and got the work done elsewhere.
F*ck them - I refuse to patronize any place that will FORCE faux noise on me.

15. I'd complain and not stay there if they didn't' change it
I've stopped going to any business that shows Faux 'News' - I just won't patronize a place that thinks I want to see Nazi News. I complained at my credit union and they initially took Faux off. Then the manager got stubborn and put it back on all the TVs. I removed my money and told the Board why - hehe.

17. I don't think its a great mystery
hotel chains have deals with either News Corp direct or through a Fox local affiliate to have the channels default to Fox.

Did it default to Fox the broadcast channel or Fox News the cable channel? There's a big difference between the two in my opinion.

20. Mercifully, my gym sticks to CNN, ESPN, and one local network affiliate
You need a radio to tune in to the cable they show. I use my iPod for my own music anyway. Although I hate CNN, I won't quit the gym over them. I would if it was Fox.

21. I have a constant battle with my YMCA. When I go to
exercise one of the TV's not on sports is on Fox. They used to hand me the remote when I came in so I could switch the channel but it is THE channel the news TV is supposed to be on I always change it to MSNBC or public television. One of the Y guys doesn't like this a bit but I am a paying customer and i told him I would not watch Fox so he compromised last time with CNN. I don't think this national Y policy but ours has a guidesheet with Fox on it and MSNBC apparently officially prohibited. A constant battle.

I show up in the evening and always change it away from Fox. I thought it was a staff guy but he as just responding to some of the teabag regulars.

22. I noticed that my last few trips to the States
Most airports I was in had CNN, but many other establishments had Faux.

Luckily, here in Central Europe, Faux is not available. In Germany, they would be banned anyway, as
anything resembling Nazi propaganda is still forbidden here.

23. You should just accept it. Fox News is the true voice of the American People.
Our country is dominated by Jerry Springer guests. They dominate everything this country does. I thought it would change after Bush disappeared but it's getting stronger than ever.

You'll drink your tea and like it!

Just ignore the hemlock taste.

30. If you can't change the channel yourself,
ask the nearest employee in the place to change the channel.

I personally take an insulting tone and ask beligerently, "can you change that crap to something resembling a news station?"

Never pass up a chance to call this fox farce what it is.

Of course, ALL of corporate media is corporate friendly, but FOX clearly takes it to another level.
