Saudi security forces have arrested scores of suspects in a terror plot involving attacks on senior officials and government oil, military and security installations, a Saudi intelligence official said today. The official said that the nine-months-long terror sweep netted 172 militants -- members of cells that make up the al Qaeda network the Saudis have been tracking for years.

4. As the story unfolded slowly

on CNN radio as I was driving I couldn't help but search cynically for the details.

"Rusted guns stored in the desert, presumably for a long time. Old airplane manuals(later, but no actual training classes). "Foreigners" (Africans, outsiders). Using planes to bomb oil fields.

Now there was not a single convincing detail that anyone in this timely release of a months long arrest process was a clear and certain threat. The details even as reported seem flabby, contrived, contradictory,convenient and sensationalist. I am sure there is a lot more reason as to why this story has come out at this time and in this way, but I am beginning not to care unless this is a desperate deflection from any future attention being paid to dangerous Saudis or lax Saudi anti-terrorism because- once more- they know something we don't and and Bush wouldn't tell.

The breathless CNN voice, so British, so enthused became progressively annoying. Oh yes, and mum's the word apparently on any details of any candidate from the recent debate until someone tells them what the spin should be.

5. I was in Saudi in the 90's

They had a big square in Riyadh where they conducted the beheadings. I didn't see one of them but I did see some floggings and one thief who had his hand cut off. They liked for Yankees to be in attendance and they would push us up front so we could get a good look.

I'm surprised the beheadings haven't started already.

6. so Saudi gave them money before 9/11 but now round them up & execute them?

Here's a theory: we label anyone we don't like as al qaeda, hence any Saudi dissidents are also al Qaeda, and if the royal family is ever overthrown in a revolution, the revolutionaries will likely be Islamic fundamentalist (even though it would be hard to make Saudi more extremist) and we will call them al Qaeda so we have an excuse to take the oil fields.
