Patrick Kennedy Won’t Seek Re-election to Congress

Representative Patrick Kennedy, the son of the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy, has told Democratic leaders that he will not seek re-election this year, a party official said Thursday evening.

Mr. Kennedy’s decision, which came six months after his father died, was expected to be formally announced Friday. It would mark the first time in a half-century that a Kennedy would not be serving in Congress.

Three Democratic officials confirmed the decision on condition of anonymity, saying there were not authorized to disclose the development before the announcement.

Mr. Kennedy recorded a video announcement that was to be released on Sunday, a party official said. The video message outlines the reasons for his decision, including his father’s death. He had also struggled with addiction during his time in Congress.

5. I thought the same thing the minute I hear it. If I were a Kennedy
I'd be inclined to do the same.

4. If he's interested,
...I'd bet Pres. Obama could find him a job somewhere in the Administration. It would be a shame to lose him altogether...

6. I wonder if he's considering going back to MA to run for Teddy's seat?
