scandal fatigue, heart ache overload.

Not much DUers can do about it, not for the 1st Responders or Katrina survivors, they are empathic, they did their share of fund raising, they will share the stories of pain and grief, but they can't do a whole lot more than that.

They do support legislation to address the needs, when there is legislation out there and whey they find out about it.

The only thing most DUers feel than can do (and in all practicality can do) is support change and that is change in the administration whether through impeachment or the '08 election.

They know our pain, they can't do much about it and that is a helpless feeling.

4. I found it very hard to swallow

in the days after 9/11 with those incredibly compassionate folks crawling all over the rubble and breathing that dust, and not believing that it couldn't possibly have been harmless. Yet all the gov't officials were all over the airwaves saying "the dust isn't toxic. The dust isn't toxic."

Afterall, in the timeperiod the towers were built, you at least had asbestos in the air. Not to mention sheetrock, paint (lead paint, even?), and other building materials.

I feel so sorry for all of them. :-(

20,000 have chronic respiratory illness. Those are just the numbers on responders. That doesn't even include the people who worked or lived in the area.

Unless there is a substantial and comprehensive change in funding and support, these same 'first responders' will be thrust into lethal situations without the proper gear and support only to suffer the same fate as these first responders, they will not get accurate information and protective support services from their government, and they will suffer likely fatal consequences.

27. Watching. Thank you! I had it on to watch Baldwin, but in the

broad scheme of things, this is SO much more important. Rosie is giving exposure to those damaged by inhalation effects during heroic efforts as first responders to 9/11. The doctor is most impressive and IMO convincing so far, and estimates are as high as 20 to 50,000 effected. Pulmonary fibrosis is an end stage lung disease and is associated with heart failure.
