1. Why would you go all the way to Rome to protest the US?

4. Ummm...I can only assume you are kidding, but...
...anyway, we all live in Rome and we're not protesting the U.S. We're calling for impeachment. We are pro-impeachment!

11. Of course I didn't know you lived in Rome
or I wouldn't have asked why you would go all the way there to protest.

This is one of the reason I travel now to eastern Europe rather than western Europe. When I'm on vacation I like a break from the US and it's politics. As you demonstrate, Americans can't help but stand out everywhere they go. Luckily I see very few Americans in the East and can actually get some time away. When I lived in Europe our motto was "go out, but don't stand out". I still try to dress like the locals and have never had any problems anywhere. When I do see Americans, they are so obvious in their shorts and T-shirts. It's actually very embarassing.

I feel sorry for the people who have saved up their entire life to see another country and culture only to run into Americans in their white shirts proclaiming impeachment.

14. When I travel abroad
I just dress as myself, if I stand out, it doesn't matter. I guess I kind of stand out around here too, so I'm used to it.

16. i feel sorry for you. Perhaps it's time you got a , you know, life, instead
worrying about other peoples life so much.

Good luck and enjoy your stay.

18. Sounds like you'd be more content living outside the U.S.
Maybe you can take a truckload of your like-minded friends with you?

22. It would lessen your chances greatly of running into other Americans.
I have a question for you: why would it offend you to see your fellow Americans in another country wearing "impeachment" t-shirts, particularly at a time when the word "impeachment" is an understatement in terms of what to do with this lying, corrupt, destructive "president"?

26. I love Americans, but what's the point of visiting a foreign country?
I prefer the local people, their food & drink, and customs while I'm on vacation. Otherwise everywhere would be exactly like America. Is that what you prefer? Do you travel thousands of miles for something different, or just more of the same?

Would it offend me to see my fellow Americans in another country wearing "impeachment" t-shirts. No, it wouldn't offend me. I would just shake my head and walk on regardless of my distaste for our president.

Where do you suppose the term ugly American came from? I don't think it had anything to do with Americans and their politics, rather how Americans travel and think the world belongs to them.

Here's a song by Joe Jackson for your next trip:

Hey pal
Can I take your picture for the people back home
They won't believe it when they see this stuff
You see the camera that I got in Hong Kong
Completely duty free

This really is a pretty scene
Could you ask your kid to smile please
Sorry what exactly do you mean
Can you say it in English
'Cause we're the . . .

Jet set - get out of our way
And don't be messin' with the . . .
Jet set - get out of our way
We got a lot of things to see

Let's get a Big Mac
Get it while the dollar's worth a thousand yen
It's quite a bargain here
Next year
We'll save some money and we'll hire Big Ben
For our anniversary

This really is a pretty scene
But I'm happy I don't live here
Hey what's the matter with the waiter's face
Can you say it in English
'Cause we're the . . .

Jet set - get out of our way
And don't be messin' with the . . .
Jet set - get out of our way
We got a lot of things to see

20. I saved up for a long time
before I went to Europe, and it was actually rather nice to run into Americans and speak english for a little while. Its kind of like saying "I feel sorry for people who go on a whale watching trip and end up seeng fish too". Maybe I'm wrong, but when I travel places, I like running into other people who are travelling too. Also, my italian, german, and french are all just barely passable, so actually being able to speak in full on english to people was great.

21. It has nothing to do with right or wrong, just preferences
A couple weeks ago my family went to Belize where we had no TV, no newspapers, no internet. I know they were available somewhere, but I never went seeking them out. As long as the beer was cold and the sun shining, I didn't care about anything. That's my idea of vacation. I only get a couple weeks off a year from my job, all I want to do is relax and be free from the stresses of everyday life.

It sounds like you enjoy speaking with others who are also traveling. I prefer speaking with locals who are living in the countries I'm visiting. Both are perfectly fine.

25. You're right
I enjoy talking with the locals too, but as my language skills aren't the greatest, most of my conversations were pretty much limited to the utilitarian stuff, and going "Heeeeeeey!" and clinking glasses. I guess that's kind of a universal language.

27. See, now we can agree
I love the simple stuff too like clinking glasses and enjoying a beer with the locals. My username is actually a beer in Poland.

I'm not usually looking for weighty conversations, but I always learn how to say hello, please, thank you, one beer, another beer, etc. They know I'm not a local, but at least I try.

Cheers!

24. Yeah, what a pain to want to see a foreign cool site and see people calling for impeachment.
Are you series????/
People who save their entire lives to see a foreign country and see a protest instead. Oh dear. What a total disappointment and waste of a trip, to see 7 people with white t-shirts proclaiming "IMPEACH". I feel sorry for people who feel their trip was a waste because of that.

Edited on Fri Apr-27-07 01:00 PM by grace0418
this compares. I would be thrilled to see a group of folks wearing these t-shirts. How you can lump stephinrome in with the rude, pushy, annoying tourists from Blandville, USA (the ones who prefer loudly over-enunciating in English to learning a few phrases in French) is completely beyond me.

Good grief.

And stephinrome, you go! Those shirts (and the cappucinos) are awesome!
