10. Exactly...
What happens in the ME is going to happen, no matter what. We can delay it by throwing bodies at the problem, or we can let it take it's course. There's a long history of unrest there, and an equally long list of countries that tried to intercede and ultimately failed. It's way past time to start using brains instead of braun.

5. We are the Soviet Union.
Tiny state-capitalist minority accumulating all the wealth,

Stalinist regimes abrogating all civil liberties (American "terrorists," whatever the government says those are today, can be hunted and killed),

Pravda-like state-capitalist-controlled press issuing steady stream of propaganda,

using the state's military power to invade and occupy countries in order to make the state-capitalist elite wealthier . . .

(pissed-off Afghan tribesmen kicking our ass)

15. There is a Russian professor predicting the same fate for the US.
He postulates that we will break up into about 5 nation states. I laughed when I first read that, but I'm sure not laughing now.

20. Orlov. He's one of my favorite prognosticators. :)
he had a powerpoint presentation on line last year that was down right creepy.

He made comparisons between the US and the USSR. Oddly, do to some under developed social structures, the USSR, comparably, had/has a better chance to survive in some form (Modern Russia) than the USA does under similar circumstances.

I still refer back to that powerpoint from time to time. And scary still, it's still pretty much on target.

I'm doubling my garden and increasing my water barrels this year. ;)

21. Thanks. I couldn't remember his name.
Speaking of doubling your garden, etc, Google "sustainable living". There are some fascinating web sites I think you may enjoy. Lots of good info.

I'm planning my garden now. Had an arbor built for grapes, 3 raised beds for veggies, am going to landscape the front yard with fruit trees, blueberry bushes, other edibles.

Have you ever considered joining a CSA? I'm planning on checking out a few around here. I'd love to get into one that provided meat&dairy as well as veggies.

BTW, what type of water barrels do you have?

22. Yeah, I've been following the sustainable living movement for quite sometime.
I wish we could grow grapes here. (Texas). I tried them last year, but we went through an epic drought. I was able to limp my garden through it, but the grapes didn't make it.

This year, I'm replacing my water barrels with 2 250 gallon totes. I'm moving my barrels to the front yard and like you, going to get rid of my lawn and only plant natives and veggies. :)

We do have fig and lemon trees and I'm hoping my black berry bushes do better this year. (I just put them in a year ago and the first time around didn't produce much).

I was a member of a CSA a while back. Since it's just myself and my girlfriend, we were overwhelmed. Pick and choose wisely, otherwise you may wind up getting more than you can eat. (but then again, you can always give away want you don't want. :) good way to get to know your neighbors better)

We get our meat and dairy from two local farms. The meat is all grass fed. No hormones, etc. Our milk and cheese is from yet another farm. We drink only raw milk now and have so for just over a year.

You might want to look into Polyface farms. They were featured in "Food, Inc" and in the "Omnivores Dilemma". They really set the model for sustainable farming.

As for my water barrels, it's better I just give you the link to my website. It's just easier that way (and gets me more traffic. LOL) http://suburbandweller.blogspot.com/2008/10/what-are-those-blue-things-part-1.html

Do you know about Alice Waters and the Weston Price foundation?
