9. Very true ..
But if Hillary wins the nomination what will the bumper stickers and signs say?

If she's the nominee and she picks Obama as VP (just an example not that I EVER dream of that ticket ... yeah right) will they say Clinton/Obama?

When Gerry Ferraro :loveya: was running as VP in '84 the tag line was Mondale/Ferraro.

4. they probably think that we hear "Clinton" and we think "Bill"
which may or may not be a bad thing depending on your point of view.

5. That's very canny marketing on her part, and the media fell for it.
They are giving her a huge assist by going along with it. They bought her chosen brand name hook line and sinker and abandoned all standard rules of journalism, singling her out by using her singular first name. What if they called Edwards "John" in every headline? It would certainly help his poll numbers. No doubt.

11. 2 Reasons-Right Wing called her that derisively throughout Clinton presidency.
to demean her and now she seems to be trying to use it to her advantage. Sort of turning a negative into a positive.

12. This question seems to be an incurable itch among us.
Edited on Fri Apr-27-07 01:24 AM by EST
The answers are all good, but, since it comes up again and again on DU, I have spent some time actually exploring my own use of her name and comparing my own experience to those others provided.
When Bill and Hillary Clinton hit the national stage, in 1991, very few of us had ever heard of them, before.
However, here it is, sixteen years later, and Ms. Clinton has been so close to our daily thoughts and concerns, we, or at least I, have the feeling that we know her, personally, whether or not we like her.

We, progressives, have a name-dropping closeness to her because of that familiarity and the respect we have for the battles she's fought and the good she's done. The opposition, on the other hand, use her first name as a bit of disrespect; that, somehow, she's unworthy of the distinction provided by a formal use of her surname and title.

Either way, whether from informal affection for us or the informal disrespect of the hating class, most of the citizenry of the country addresses her, third person, as "Hillary."
For these, and all the other good reasons, I just don't consider it an issue to get one's dickies in a wad over and, if someone else didn't always do so, it would not even occur to me to bring it up.

13. It's easy. She originally ran that way in NY for Senate
and I think it was to distinguish herself clearly from Bill and say "I am my own person."

She's sticking with it.
