Talk-show ideologues can inspire violence

There was no dispute that Scott Roeder gunned down Kansas abortion provider Dr. George Tiller. What was disputed was whether Roeder was justifiably defending others (i.e. babies) by his actions. It took a jury less than 40 minutes to say no.

Also, without dispute, was the role rabid right-wing zealots, most notably Bill O'Reilly and Pat Robertson, played in fomenting a climate that lead to Roeder going from peaceful protester to avenging angel.

In the months leading up to the murder, Tiller was already tabbed in Kansas with the label Tiller the baby killer, when O'Reilly, like a schoolyard bully, continued the taunt on numerous occasions in the 29 episodes he did on Tiller.

Evidence at trial showed Roeder was consumed by the media, particularly Robertson's "700 Club" and Robertson's incessant pleas that abortions must somehow be stopped.

Sometimes when ideologues speak, unbalanced individuals are incited to carry out violence. Unfortunately, this was one of those instances.

Other than mock them, I'm not sure there is much that can be done without risking freedom of speech.
