Why We Can't Afford to Let Obama Give Bush's War Criminals a Free Pass

Punishing the guilty for deeds they committed in the past is the only way to show the world that we are truly on a new path.
February 6, 2010

In a week when one-year report cards on the Obama administration were piling up and not all the grades were good, Americans searching for the real change we heard so much about on Obama's campaign trail were hit with some news that would send his grades plummeting. Late last Friday, we learned that Obama's Department of Justice plans to go easy on John Yoo and Jay Bybee -- the two assistant attorney generals under Bush who penned the infamous torture memos. For those who have been working long and hard in the accountability movement to make sure no one -- not even presidents or their top advisors -- is above the law, this was a serious setback.

1. Ok, here's how it works
Take a look at history, what do you see? Do you see other Presidents or monarchs or popes or other big-time leaders going after their predecessors? No? Know why? I'll give you a moment to ponder......

Ok, the reason why this does not happen, like ever, is because no one will set such a precedent. It's just that simple. It ain't gonna happen, ever. Every minute anyone spends on this issue is a wasted minute. It will never come to anything so anyone who ever gets their hopes up that it will, is in for disappointmen.

4. All crimes are committed in the past. You can't arrest someone for
committing a bank robbery in the future, unless they are planning one and it's discovered.

Bush and his crime gang are murderers. There is no doubt about that.

6. To be dismissive of any portion heinous crew is to see in the brightest of lights,
the lack of equal justice. As we are deemed a land governed by the rule of law, that justice, if not equally applied, is lost sight of in its entirety. For this America to recover, this government needs to demonstrate its leadership, are bound by the oaths they all took to pursue atonement for the crimes against a world full of publics. Nothing of what we thought we stood for will be believable if we just look they other way while they slither off.

I didn't make the jump to read the whole article at Alternet, but recognized the name of the author immediately. She was a candidate in Vermont for Attorney General in the last election cycle who campaigned on a pledge to prosecute Bushco.

Kicked to promote equal justice.
