Have Toyota's problems extended to the Scion line?
I'm trying to find out, but there's no information that I can find.

My SO bought a Scion XD last August under the Cash for Clunkers program. He's been really happy with it, zipping around the Triangle with his manual stick-shift. :-)

I'm really worried that the brake/accelerator problems will be announced for Scion as well, but I can't find anything. Is no news really good news, or is the other shoe about to drop. Any DU Scion owners wondering the same?

1. I wonder if a manual transmission would be affected in the same way.
It would seem that you could push in the clutch in the case of unwanted acceleration. Just a thought.

2. Possibly
I've never driven nor owned a manual, so I don't know much about them :P

I hope that's the case.

3. Has anyone ever explained why the automatics can't just be thrown into neutral?

4. They *CAN* be, but some of the Toyota automatic shift levers have a weird pattern...
...that makes it non-trivial to get the thing shifted
into "neutral", especially if you were in semi-automatic
mode.

7. Yikes!
One of my mottoes is, "Optimism never goes unpunished," and this is why. There should always be multiple safety systems in case the first one doesn't work.

Still...what about shutting the engine off? Or did they screw that up as well?

8. The "hold the start button for three seconds" sounds like tragically-awful human factors...
...engineering to me. So far, all of my cars still shut
off by turning the key, but I guess I'll have to investigate
this if I ever trade-up to a newer Audi that has some
sort of pushbutton stuff.

13. Shutting the engine off means losing both power steering and brakes.

18. at any speed other than slow the power steering isn't needed
One of my friends used to drive her car without the power steering and I drove it a couple times myself. It was heavy steering in a parking lot but once going down the road it wasn't obvious there were no power steering. When you're scared as you would be under those circumstances even a small person can press the brake hard enough to slide the wheels. I don't buy the 'but you loose the power steering and power brakes', just turn the fucking engine off, kill it, shut it down whatever you want to call it but stop it from pulling you forward ever faster.

20. I don't know about the driver part
but I know that all cars have a direct link between the steering wheel and the front tires and as I said you can steer it fine going down the road, slow speeds its a little tougher but still turnable.

5. You could always lift the hood and see if there's a good-old-fashioned...
...cable-operated throttle body. If that's the case,
you're certainly immune to the "sticky electronic
throttle pedal" problem that's central to the current
discussion.

Thanks, Tesha!

Should they be announcing a recall on the Scion too, then?

17. Maybe not. Depends on the supplier for the inside throttle
components. If they were sourced in Japan, they're OK.

6. I've been wondering the same thing
I bought a 2010 tC Scion last summer and have also googled for information concerning the brake/accelerator problems and couldn't find anything either. It would be nice to hear from someone that is knowledgeable about the Scion and their mechanics.

21. I have an 05 tC and have been unable to find any info
Was planning on selling it before this whole accelerator fiasco, but I think I'll be going through with it sooner rather than later now.
