Tories, Liberals remain deadlocked: poll
Last Updated: Thursday, February 4, 2010 | 7:57 AM ET

CBC News

The Conservatives and Liberals remain in a virtual tie for support for a third week in a row, a new EKOS poll suggests.

The poll, released exclusively to CBC News on Thursday, asked Canadians which party they would vote for if an election were held tomorrow. It found 31.9 per cent would support the Liberals, compared with 31 per cent who would back the Conservatives.

The poll also found that 15.4 per cent of Canadians would vote for the NDP, 10.9 per cent for the Green Party and 8.4 per cent for the Bloc Quebecois.

While the Tories remain strong in the West, the Liberals have more support in Ontario (40.6 per cent to 32.4 per cent) and in Quebec (27 per cent to 17.8 per cent).

The poll also suggested that slightly more Canadians believe the government is headed in the wrong direction (45.7 per cent) than the right direction (42.6 per cent), although the difference falls within the margin of error. .........(more)

2. Actually, that's a big improvement. The Liberals had been trailing.....
...... and if you tally up all the left-leaning parties, they've still got a huge majority.

3. The silver lining here (I think)
is that if this persists, and there were an election, the Liberals would steal some number of "strategic votes" from NDP, Bloc or Green supporters who want primarily to topple the Tories.

4. I could live with a Liberal minority government.
and with a big NDP number in Parliament.

6. This is goodish news.
Meh. I can't really get excited about the Libs, but at least they're not the Conservatives, eh?

I'm kind of hoping that the Wildrose party fields national candidates, or at least that the popularity of Wildrose in Alberta causes a new national (but mostly Albertan) right wing party to rise up to split the small "c" conservative vote. What's Preston Manning up to these days? :D
