Hero Central: Ken-Ton Second Grader Battles Cancer

TONAWANDA, NY-For the past few years, Thomas Edison Elementary School in the Ken-Ton district has been participating in "Pennies for Patients," a coin collection drive for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

This year, they're not just helping the society, but they're helping one of their own.

Jack Vanderwall, a second grader Thomas Edison Elementary, loves math, reading, gym and playing games with his Mom, brother and sister. On the surface, he's just a normal seven year old.

But Jack also misses school once a week because he's battling leukemia.

Vanderwall recently returned to school after missing an extended amount of time right around his diagnosis in December.

According to Jack's Mom Dawn, he's been more than brave throughout his weekly chemotherapy treatments. She said that Jack's home nurse was pleasantly surprised at how well Jack got through the treatments. A lot of children need their parents to restrain them just to make sure the treatments are successful.
