Special Olympics Chairman and CEO Timothy Shriver personally accepted an apology from White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel on Wednesday, days after comments surfaced in which Emanuel used the word "retarded" to describe a proposal made by a group of liberal Democrats.

According to a joint statement from Shriver and five other disability advocates who attended a meeting at the White House, Emanuel "sincerely apologized for his mistake and the pain it caused in our community." Emanuel also committed to signing an online pledge to make the word obsolete.

"We are thankful to Mr. Emanuel for meeting with us today and hearing our concerns," the statement said.

"Our community has earned the right to be respected instead of ridiculed. We have suffered injustice for generations and we are demanding that it end," the advocates said. "This is another small step on the road to a country that accepts the gifts of all."

Emanuel invited Shriver and the other advocates to meet with him after his months-old remarks came to light in a Wall Street Journal article this week and infuriated members of the disability rights community.

According to the report, last August Emanuel met with liberal groups at a weekly strategy session that highlighted the issue of health care reform. Emanuel used the term "f---ing retarded" after hearing from a group of liberals that they planned to run television ads against the more conservative, reform-averse members of their own party.

1. I do not think he should be fired over this but as the mother of a child
with a developmental disability I think that he was angry and may just have presented a real picture of himself as the arrogant self important fool that he is. I would not support him for dog catcher from now on.

2. Actually, it might be fun seeing him as dog catcher.
Working class pay. Chasing around strays. Having to listen to yapping all day. Maybe getting bit once in awhile. It might do that ego well to have such a job for awhile!

3. When the Repugs call for Rahm's removal for this statement
(made in private and off the record and not made public until this book came out),

where are the calls from the Right for Rush Limbaugh's removal for doing this on public airwaves and constantly using the word "Retard", saying that the group calling for Rahm's removal meeting at the "White House" as a "Retard Summit"?

For the record, the idiot Don Imus did his stupid remark on the air ... and has quite often been lumped in with the "left", despite his fellations of Republicans, and his dreadful "standup" bit hitting Clinton years ago ...

4. He's an elitist pice of crap.
Rich, money-loving, insensitive, insulated, self-centered piece of crap.

Appointing him is one more reason Obama is under fire from the left.

We all knew he was crap from the beginning. this just confirms it.

7. Just Curious...
If someone other than Emmanuel had said this...say a certain DK (and not a slam on him) or Feingold or another Progressive hero, if the outrage would have been anywhere near this...or would we see people trying to dismiss the remark as taken out of context.

As one who is the guardian of a handicapped sister as well as one who dedicates time and money to assist the home she lives in, I find it far more offensive when a politician promises to help these people and then turns their backs on them when money is yanked out of a budget. Last year several of us paid out of our pockets to make up the shortfalls in state and federal funding that threatened to close their home. Action speaks louder than words.

Emmanuel was callous and stupid for his use of words...even if he thought it was being said in private. But I also see it being used as an attack on him, not in support of the handicapped. Don't like the guy...all well and good...I have plenty of bitches with the man myself, but make it on substance...on how he's hurt the chances of Progressives to get party funding. Using the disabled to settle a political vendetta is disengenuous.

9. And Honestly, What Good Would That Do?
The Emmanuel/DLC hate is so deep, I doubt there's anything he could say that would be sufficient. I don't need or expect an appology...talk is cheap and we get plenty of that these days, I'm looking for action and results...not political points.

10. This incident, IMO, points up the need to more closely examine ...
those who Obama chose to be with him and whose agenda he's supporting --

Emmanuel and the DLC do harm to the Democratic Party -- their agenda is counter

to everything we are trying to support --

labor - unions -- women -- equal rights -- human rights -- homosexual rights --

anti-war -- environmental -- down the line the DLC and Wall Street interests, the

MIC interests are all COUNTER to what we are voting for.

So what are we doing?

What is Obama doing?
