Jobs SO 20th Century... we live in a "post-employment economy"...
Edited on Wed Feb-03-10 02:24 PM by ddeclue
I mean who needs a job anyways? Can't we all be America's next top model? Win the Powerball? Win on Jeopardy? Be the American Idol? Win on Survivor? Marry a millionaire? Aren't all of us smarter than a fifth grader? Can't we just build a mylar balloon and claim our kid has floated away on it? Play for the NFL? Be a rapper or a rocker? Be a movie star?

Who needs a job anyways?

1. "Hey . . . you work HARD enough and put your nose to the grinder, you can be ANY of those things!"
"Pull yerself up by yer BOOTSTRAPS, lazy!!"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horatio_alger_myth

The most poisonous myth of all time, and everyone who's in power and runs shit not only believes it hook, line and sinker, but managed to convince over half of US that it's possible as well.

Somebody get the MythBusters on this one.

"After careful analysis, the Horatio Alger archtype...is totally busted."

9. You do know what the Horatio Alger archtype is, don't you?
In all the stories, the earnest young man makes a favorable impression of one kind or another on an older, wealthy man, who employs him. He then marries the older man's daughter.

Bootstraps my ass.

4. A post-employment economy would be great, actually
Provided we decided to make economic security a basic human right.

8. The "Old" Democratic Party actually STOOD for that!
"In our day these economic truths have become accepted as self-evident. We have accepted, so to speak, a second Bill of Rights under which a new basis of security and prosperity can be established for all—regardless of station, race, or creed.

Among these are:

The right to a useful and remunerative job in the industries or shops or farms or mines of the nation;

The right to earn enough to provide adequate food and clothing and recreation;

The right of every farmer to raise and sell his products at a return which will give him and his family a decent living;

The right of every businessman, large and small, to trade in an atmosphere of freedom from unfair competition and domination by monopolies at home or abroad;

The right of every family to a decent home;

The right to adequate medical care and the opportunity to achieve and enjoy good health;

The right to adequate protection from the economic fears of old age, sickness, accident, and unemployment;

The right to a good education.

All of these rights spell security. And after this war is won we must be prepared to move forward, in the implementation of these rights, to new goals of human happiness and well-being."---FDR

As mentioned above, THIS is the "old" Democratic Party which bears NO resemblance to the Party using that name today.

I joined the "old" Democratic Party 42 years ago.
I really miss it.

11. That Democratic party is now the Green Party.
And because we don't have preferential voting in this country, they can't get any traction.

6. Well, the trick is in creating them.
Figure out how to do that and the problem will be solved.

PS. Banning out-sourcing won't do it.

10. Or, become a politician with a Rolodex full of lobbyist's numbers.
And, sing "Happy Days are Here Again".
