Barton statement on federal spending, deficits
Published: Tuesday, February 2, 2010 6:49 PM CST
Congressman Joe Barton (R-Ennis/ Arlington) reacts to record spending and deficits in President Obama’s new budget proposal:

“The President has been talking a good game when it comes to government spending, but there is a dramatic disconnect between his rhetoric and his actions. Just last week he called for a spending freeze, then today he releases a budget containing largest deficit in U.S. history, that doubles the debt in five years, and triples it by 2019.

“It is tough to wrap your mind around the amount of spending in the President’s budget and one can easily get lost in this avalanche of zeros.

“The budget does include some positive proposals like tax cuts for small businesses and increasing of the child care tax break for middle-class families.

“But also buried in the 1,420 page document is a dizzying array of hidden taxes.

“These tax increases affect individuals as well as companies – from the people who own and operate small businesses to life insurance and energy companies. Each will see taxes rise, forcing them to cut back on growth, job creation or simply pass the cost onto consumers.

“It is simple: President Obama’s budget spends too much, borrows too much and taxes too much.

“Businesses and families don’t run their budgets this way and neither should the federal government. Republicans have alternatives and we will continue to push our plans that will create jobs and cut spending.”

U.S. Rep. Joe Barton,

Texas Sixth Congressional District

1. Rep. Barton does not want change. He is a No, No, No, No, No person.
I note that he does not suggest any way to balance the budget himself or precisely what spending he would like to cut.
